LC can't hold off LSU-S at Bringhurst

ALEXANDRIA, La. – There are bad innings and then there are the innings that one would rather not remember. Unfortunately, for Louisiana College, the 10th inning in Tuesday’s 14-5 loss to LSU-Shreveport in the annual DARE Game is one the Wildcats might not be able to forget.

After being unable to hold a 5-4 lead in the ninth, the Wildcats went into the 10th inning with hopes of beating one of the top NAIA teams in the nation.

Those hopes vanished to the tune of the Pilots scoring nine runs (seven of them unearned) on eight hits and two errors in the top half of what turned out to be the only extra inning needed.

LSU-S scored three unearned runs and one earned run before the Wildcats recorded their first out in the 10th and never stopped rolling, sending a total of 14 to the plate before finally being retired.

It was an unflattering end to what had been a competitive game through nine.

The Wildcats, who fell to 6-13 on the year, fell behind early, allowing an unearned run to the Pilots in the first, but rebounded with two runs in their half of the opening inning with two runs thanks to RBI singles by Mike Doughty and Brandt Daigle.

From innings 2-5, both defenses kept the opposing bats at bay but in the top of the sixth, LSU-S reclaimed the lead with two runs off LC reliever Chris Bridges.

In the seventh, the Pilots added another run off senior pitcher Dustin Tubre, however, the Wildcats stormed back in the bottom of the seventh with three runs - two coming on an RBI single by Doughty and one coming when Ryan Lavergne scored from third on a fielder’s choice - to take a 5-4 lead.

The bad news for LC and the 2,000 local DARE students, who were solidly behind the Wildcats, that was that the good news ended there for Louisiana College.

The Pilots tied the game in the ninth with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly and proceeded to run away with the contest in the 10th.

The loss overshadowed positive batting performances by several LC batters, who compiled five runs on 12 hits with four costly errors.

Cody Laprarie, the LC leadoff batter, went 2-for-4 with a pair of run scored while Doughty went 2-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI, Lavergne went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Walt McGee went 2-for-3.
LSU-S, however, was better compiling 14 runs on 18 hits with just one error.

Shawn Moy went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and drilled a three-run homer in the 10th.
Curtis Beaudoin went 2-for-6 with a run scored, David Morgan 2-for-6 with a run scored, Chase Wentz 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI, Andrew Brouillette 2-for-5 with a run scored and two driven in, Andrew Blubaugh 2-for-7 with a pair of runs scored and one driven in and Brandon Bravata 3-for-6 with three runs scored and an RBI.

LSU-S pitcher Corey Theriot got the win while LC senior Steven Jones (1-2) took the loss.

The Wildcats return to action Saturday afternoon with a home doubleheader against Wiley College.
