All the Shakespeare you could laugh at… and more!

by Melody Mutch

tlc's adaptation of 'Shakespeare Abridged' pulls out all the stops

Sword fights, men in dresses, sock puppets, and robotic toys are some of the few things that are featured in theater louisiana college’s most recent production.

Juniors, Adam Seth Thompson, Coby Norman, and alumnus, John Willie, are part of the three-man cast that comprises "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged", which opened Feb. 2.

Bringing about a funnier side of Shakespeare’s works, Shakespeare Abridged, pulls the audience into the show and gives them a completely new look at some of the best plays ever written. Shakespeare Abridged includes all 37 of William Shakespeare’s plays brought to you by some of the quirkiest personalities on campus.

“They cast the characters based on our personalities so of course, my character is the stupid funny guy that doesn’t understand Shakespeare,” said Norman. “John is the center between Seth and me. Seth is the Shakespearean scholar who is very knowledgeable about everything Shakespeare.”

The artistic ideas put into this show from the cast and crew bring the audience into a contemporary feeling with a graffiti-covered set and a modern spin on the typical Shakespearean attire.

Doubled with a very impromptu atmosphere, the laid back ambiance to this show is something that tlc has never done before.

“This show is very challenging in a myriad of aspects,” said Thompson. “Primarily due to an immense amount of physically demanding blocking added to the challenge of having to correctly quote a healthy amount of Shakespearean text. Include the improvisation required and you have a show that seriously challenges an actor to be all he truly is as well as improve on what he is weak in.”

“It is a different show for us as actors, but also for the audience members,” said Willie. “It’s not plot-driven so it’s really about condensing all of the works of Shakespeare and making fun of the typical man running around on stage in tights image that people think of when they hear about Shakespeare.”

Thompson, Norman, and Willie all agree that "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged" will stir up laughter among audiences, even those that are not very familiar with Shakespeare’s works.

Norman jokingly ended by saying, “You should come see Shakespeare because I’m in it. It is hilarious. Don’t come see it because of John Willie, nor Seth Thompson. Come see it because of Coby Norman. Thank you.”

Tickets for "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged" are on sale for $15 for LC students and staff to eat dinner or $2 without dinner. The show runs Thursday-Saturday Feb. 2-5 and 9-12 at 7 p.m. with matinees at 2 p.m. both weekends on Saturday and Sunday.
