An Application of Learning another Language
By Micara McVay

When I was six years old, my parents became missionaries to Spain.

I was tutored for half a year in Spanish and then put into Spanish public schools. It quickly became my first grammatically learned language and trumped English as my first language until I was in high school.

Because of my parents’ job, there were often church groups from the United States who would come to help with projects. Because they did not speak any Spanish, I would translate for them since I was around. I started translating when I was about eight years old.

When I moved back to the United States, I had a job with a criminal lawyer who would take me to prisons to translate for Hispanic prisoners who were mostly there on drug charges, although my favorite was a Chilean man who had been a contract killer. He was nice and talked about his family a lot.

I have translated for construction companies during migrant worker seasons, mostly documentation translating and explaining tax form questions. It is a great job to have, but it is really important to get a translating certification first, because if not, companies will take advantage of your skills.

I did not want to just have a certification because I wanted to be paid what I was worth since I have been doing it for 15-plus years. Therefore, I decided my best option would be to earn my bachelors degree in Languages (Spanish being my main language), thus setting myself up for better paying jobs in the future.
