Art students display work at first-ever sculpture show

by Al Quartemont

Campus display to run for next three weeks.

It started with an old chair at a local trading post.

But, LC junior Kayla Bustard, an art major from Alexandria, saw something in it that no one else had.

"It was overall a very feminine chair - very sophisticated," Bustard said.

So she bought it, brought it to her art class, and turned it into a sculpture that became one of the highlight pieces at the "LC Sculpture Invitational" - an event that opened Thursday at the Art Gallery in the Weathersby Fine Arts Building.

"At the time, it was the highest grade I’d ever given," Rondall Reynoso, LC's Assistant Professor of Art and Director of the Art Gallery, said of Bustard's final creation. "I thought we were getting really nice work (from the other students) and we needed to highlight it."

Thus was born LC's first-ever all-sculpture show featuring work done by freshman who are in first-year, basic courses all the way up to current and retired faculty.

The exhibit made its debut with a reception and gallery talk - a talk that included some of the students explaining their work - students like Bustard who had to work through some nerves to explain to the many student who packed the gallery for the opener what inspired her.

"This is my first time to ever do this," Bustard said. "But it’s very enjoyable too see everyone experience it and get what they want to out of it."

"When I was making (the sculpture), in my head I was thinking 'this is going to either go really well or really bad.' But I enjoyed making it so it was all worth it to me. I was definitely surprised getting the highest grade."

To see Bustard's work as well as the work of the other LC students and faculty, you can visit the LC Art Gallery on the first floor of the Weathersby Fine Arts Building during normal school hours. Reynoso said the exhibit will remain open for three weeks.
