Cats Baseball goes 1-3 in busy opening weekend at home

by LC Sports Information

Tough results against a strong Rhodes College team

The LC Wildcats baseball team had a busy weekend with their home opener against Texas College Friday night, a JV game against Texas College on Saturday afternoon, and then a Saturday night varsity game with Rhodes College followed by a Sunday doubleheader with Rhodes. Overall, the Cats went 1-3 on the varsity level. Here is a look at the weekend:

Friday:

What do Stuart Morgan, Steven Jones, Brett King, josh Foster, Grant Cox, Justin lacy, Jordan Meisner, Hunter King and Cole Bishop have in common?

On Friday night at Louisiana College, these nine young men – ranging from freshman to senior in experience, combined to pitch one inning apiece for LC in its home-opening 10-2 win over Texas College, a win that improved Louisiana College Baseball’s mark to 2-0 on the young season.

The nine-some combined to allow nine hits and issue just one walk while striking out six and allowing a pair of earned runs.
They also set the table nicely for the Wildcat offense to open up against the Steers, which the LC bats did to the tune of 10 runs on 15 hits on the night.
Virtually everyone who entered the game for LC got in on the act.

Bishop, who played the first eight innings of the game at shortstop before closing for the Wildcats in the ninth, was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI.
Designated hitter Jonathan Ettinger went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Starting catcher Anthony Benoit went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Chris Waguespack, who spelled Benoit in the seventh inning, was 1-for-1 with a run scored and an RBI.

Third baseman Walt McGee went 2-for-4 on the night with an RBI and a run scored.
Centerfielder Cody Laprarie, the LC leadoff man, had a 3-for-5 night with three runs scored while his fellow outfielder, Jon Michael Kidd (who spent time in both left and right field) went 2-for-3 with a run batted in.
Freshman first baseman Mike Doughty was good for a pair of runs scored.

Saturday:

The Louisiana College Wildcats suffered their first defeat of this young season, falling 12-4 to the Rhodes College Lynx on Saturday night.

It was a dream start for the Wildcats in the first inning. Cody Laprairie and Steven Bowman each got on board with a single before third baseman Walt McGee belted a 3-1 fastball over the left-field wall for his first career homerun, giving the hosts a 3-0 lead.

Wildcats starting pitcher Dustin Tubre looked confident in his pitching in the early innings, recording six strikeouts in the first three frames. In the fifth, Tubre allowed the first two Rhodes batters to reach and was removed in favor of Josh Foster, who would pitch a rocky four and one-third innings.

Not helped by two errors, LC gave up four runs in the fifth inning to fall behind, and would never reclaim the lead. The Lynx added two more runs in the sixth, and the Wildcats continued to trail, despite adding
an unearned run in the bottom of the inning.

Rhodes College piled it on in the ninth inning, batting around and scoring six runs on seven hits and two walks.

Right-fielder Brent Lindsey had three RBIs for the visitors and third baseman Kyle Peterson had three hits and scored three runs.

Tubre, Foster, and Stuart Morgan struck out 15 Lynx batters, while Austin Carden and Hunter Chandler combined for 14 strikeouts for Rhodes College. Carden pitched five innings, allowing only the three
runs on McGee’s homer and earned the victory. Foster took the loss after allowing ten runs, eight of them earned.

Steven Bowman had three hits for Louisiana College, and catcher Anthony Benoit went 2-4 with a run scored as LC’s record fell to 2-1.

Sunday:

The Louisiana College baseball team was right in both of their games on Sunday afternoon, but timely hitting by Rhodes College allowed the Lynx to sweep LC, dropping the Wildcats to 2-3.

Neither pitcher allowed an earned run in the first contest, but the game ended 3-2 in favor of the visiting Lynx. Justin Reed and Taylor Babich both turned in stellar pitching performances for their team,
with each hurler taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning. Babich earned the win with a 6.2 inning, three hit performance, while Justin Reed struck out seven and allowed four hits over six innings to take
the hard-luck loss.

Brogan Jayne had a two-run single to cap off the three-run sixth inning for Rhodes College. Trouble started in the sixth when Walt McGee threw a ground-ball wide of first-base, pulling Mike Doughty off
of the bag and allowing Lynx second baseman Nick Belisle to reach. A walk and two straight singles allowed Belisle to score. Reed got DH Austin Marcum to strike out swinging, but Jayne delivered with the two out knock through the middle.

LC made a comeback effort in the last half-inning, when pinch hitter Matt Savoie stroked an RBI double to left field, and pinch runner Cole Bagbey scored on a Cole Bishop single, but it was a case of too little, too late for the home team. Matt Gertz came in to record the final out and pick up the save as the Lynx took the first two games of the weekend series.

Jonathan Ettinger picked up a single for the Wildcats, as did Steven Bowman, who swung the bat well all weekend.

In the nightcap, the hosts again hung with Rhodes College, who got another great pitching performance from their starter, Jackson Baker, only to fall by a count of 7-2.

Baker held the Wildcats to three hits and only one unearned run over five and two-thirds of an inning.

Louisiana College went into the seventh inning trailing by a run, and could have been tied up but for an unsuccessful squeeze play that saw Cole Bagbey caught stealing home. In the top of the seventh, the Lynx hammered reliever Grant Cox, who allowed five earned runs on three hits and three walks in just an inning and a third.

Cody Laprairie, who went 3-4 in the contest, homered to lead off the bottom of the seventh, but that was all the offensive comeback that LC could muster. Anthony Vangessel, who started and went five innings,
allowing two runs, took the loss for Louisiana College, who only knocked eight hits over the two games.

Looking Ahead:

The Wildcats' game with LSU-Shreveport, originnaly slated for Tuesday at 6:30 in Shreveport, has been rescheduled to Wednesday at 4 p.m. due to the threat of snow in the Northeast corner of the state.

On Friday, LC will begin American Southwest Conference play when the Wildcats host Mary Hardin-Baylor at 6 p.m. Friday for a single game and then Saturday at Noon for a doubleheader.
