Cats set to face McMurry’s “Air Raid” in season finale

by Al Quartemont

Indians led by former SEC coach Hal Mumme

It wasn't so long ago Hal Mumme was the genius behind the "Air Raid" attack that Kentucky's Tim Couch was using to light up SEC defenses. That was then. This is now.

Mumme has made several stops since those Kentucky days of the late 90s. Those stops included Southeast Louisiana in Hammond and up until last season, New Mexico State. Today, Mumme is the head coach of McMurry University in Abilene, Texas. If you are wondering how a coach goes from the SEC to Division III, you might be tempted to think Mumme's career has declined. But that's not considering the cancer.

After feelings of fatigue and even illness during the 2008 season, Mumme was diagnosed as having prostate cancer. When NMSU's season came to an end, so did Mumme's coaching career there. In February of this year, Mumme underwent surgery to remove the cancer. Just over two months, later, however, he was in Abilene to be announced as McMurry's new head coach.

However you look at the circumstances leading to Mumme's arrival at MU, the Indians are glad to have him. After going 0-10 in 2008, McMurry started 0-4 this season, but then proceeded to win four straight games. That streak had emotions running high heading into last week's game - the "battle for Abilene" which MU lost to Hardin Simmons, 21-10. It marked the 22nd straight time the Indians have lost to HSU, but one gets the feeling with Mumme's presence across town now, that streak might not last much longer.

Oh, and Mumme isn't the only coach on the McMurry roster. Joe Lee Dunn is a former defensive coordinator at Mississippi State.

It all adds up to present a new challenge for teams like Louisiana College which know this game in the schedule is no longer a next to automatic win.

"Were going to play a much improved McMurry team," Dennis Dunn, LC's head coach said. "It will be an electric kind of environment. If people like the passing game, they need to come out. There will be a lot of balls in the air Saturday."

Kickoff is at 1 p.m at Wildcats Stadium. Can't wait to see you there.
