College students ‘Reawaken’ at CEC 2012

by Karlee Farris

College Evangelism Conference held at FBC Pineville

Students came from all across the state to First Baptist Church of Pineville on February 10 and 11 for CEC 2012 .

Around 800 students came together to worship and hear the Gospel to grow in their faith and have the opportunity to fellowship with each other.

This year's event was full of learning opportunities through seminars, worship and the presentation of the Gospel. Some of our very own Louisiana College staff members led a few of the seminars.

Dr. Tylitha Whatley of the Christian Education Department of LC led the seminar on "Time Management and the Busyness of College." Also leading a seminar on "Awakenings throughout American History" was LC Professor of History, Dr. Scott Culpepper. In addition to these seminars, there were ten others to choose from - all very relatable to college and high school students.

“What a great weekend,” Louisiana Baptist Convention collegiate minister team leader Mark Robinson said. “I hope the students enjoyed the fellowship with old and new friends from every college campus in our state.”

The main session of this conference featured speaker Josh Mauldin. A native of Lafayette, La., Mauldin is an alumnus of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, as well as New Orleans and Southern seminaries. He has served in numerous positions in missions and outreach ministries in the U.S and Canada.

Mauldin is currently serving as collegiate minister at First Baptist Church of Fayetteville, Ark., where he enjoys helping students understand, grow, and share the Gospel with their campus and the world. For CEC, Mauldin touched on the the theme of “Awakening to Christ’s Sacrifice”, and he encouraged students to have the desire to reach out and love others as Christ did.

Leading the worship for the main session was recording artist and performer Phil Wickham. Raised in Vista ,California, Wickham began at an early age to let God use him. After feeling the need to "make his faith his own" he began leading worship for his youth group at 12 years old.

Since entering the music industry, Wickham has released five albums and the Lord is still using him to move people with his music. Wickham had the opportunity to share many of his songs with the students during CEC.

“Every year students are able to come face to face with our Lord through worship ,fellowship and strong teaching of the word,” Robinson said. “As you encounter the Lord my hope is that you will be able to discern how He is Leading you to serve him both here in Louisiana and around the world.”
