Cats lose battle of the boards in second half

PINEVILLE, La. - At the half, the LC Wildcats and Mary Hardin-Baylor Cru were tied with 21 rebounds each.

But at the end of the game, that number stood at 51 for UMHB and only 34 for LC. That 30-13 discrepancy was a huge factor in the 91-81 final score that saw Mary Hardin-Baylor come away with a hard-fought win over the Wildcats.

It was LC's last game before a lengthy Christmas break and one that sent the Wildcats into their holiday with a 4-5 overall record and a 3-3 mark in the ASC.

Mary Hardin-Baylor (5-1, 3-1 ASC) hit 11 three-pointers on the night and shot 45 percent from both the field and three-point range.

The Wildcats hit 12 three-pointers of their own and shot 81 percent at the free-throw line, but included in their being out-rebounded by the Cru were 18 offensive boards for UMHB to LC's seven.

Junior post Korey Salmon led the charge for LC on offense with 23 points to go along with seven rebounds, three blocks and three assists.

Sophomore wing Danny Sumner had the best game of his young career, hitting six three-pointers en route to a personal best 22 points.

Junior point guard JeLani Mitchell, who fouled out late in the contest, was good for 13 points and nine assists while senior post Chukwuma Ekeh scored nine points and pulled down nine rebounds.

Mary Hardin-Baylor was led by Robert Moore, who put up 23 points and grabbed six rebounds. James Allen scored 15 points, Marlon Miller 12 and Dean Pele 11 in the win.

The Wildcats will not return to action again until Jan. 4 with a visit to NCAA Division I foe Lamar in Beaumont, Texas.
