Changes in the Division of Christian Studies

by Sarah Hudson

Dr. Hiles will serve as the new Interim Chair of the Division of Christian Studies

With the start of the Spring 2010 semester, Louisiana College is looking ahead to changes in the Division of Christian Studies.

Dr. Charles Quarles, Chair of the Division of Christian Studies, requested to be relieved of his duties as Chair so that he can devote more time to his Research Professorship.

Quarles has written three books in just over four years and is currently working on a commentary on the Sermon on the Mount. He said that it has been difficult to split his time between his duties as Chair of the Division of Christian Studies and his research and writing.

He has been Chair for a little over four years and with his decision to leave has suggested Dr. Jason Hiles as the new Interim Chair of the Division.

"Dr. Hiles has a good combination of both leadership and administrative gifts," Quarles said. "I think that he will take the Division to the next level."

Since Quarles began as Chair, the faculty of the Division of Christian Studies has significantly changed and the curriculum has been revised as well. Quarles said that the Christian Education and Philosophy degrees have been revised and two new degrees have been added--Biblical Studies and Christian Studies.

"I've enjoyed my time as Chair," Quarles said. "I've especially appreciated my colleagues and their gracious support of my leadership. We've got a good team here."

Hiles said that the department is already set up well, and he will simply, "focus on streamlining and making sure that everything is organized."

After managing a restaurant several years ago, Hiles has administrative qualities that will help to refine what Quarles has already done in the Division of Christian Studies.

"I'm excited, but of course, a little bit nervous," Hiles said. "I'm still learning the position."

The decision became official at an LC council meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 6, said Hiles.
