Do you have a Kingdom purpose?

by Al Quartemont

Dr. Kenneth Hemphill challenges students at Feb. 18 Chapel

There were plenty of probing questions for students, faculty and staff at Louisiana College to ponder at the Feb. 18 weekly chapel.

Dr. Kenneth Hemphill, the National Strategist for Empowering Kingdom Growth for the Southern Baptist Convention posed some of these:

"What is your passion?"

"What is the purpose of your life?"

"What motivates you?"

From there, Dr. Hemphill, who once served as the president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, Tx., asked his ultimate question, "Do you have a Kingdom purpose?"

Working from that question, Dr. Hemphill broke his message into three points.

First, the idea of "competing" kingdoms in the world - the kingdom of Satan versus the Kingdom of Jesus Christ.

"Whose kingdom has priority in your life, and whose kingdom do you seek," Dr. Hemphill asked. "Which moves you - the kingdom of earth and the reward of man or the Kingdom of God and the reward of your Heavenly Father?"

Next, Dr. Hemphill looked at the defining nature of "the King's children," saying that the longer a person is a believer, the more he or she ought to look like their "Father." He added that "Kingdom" children will live for a single purpose, that being the Father's reward.

And finally, Dr. Hemphill looked at "the King's Desire," pointing out that for the Christian, his ultimate purpose is to advance God's Kingdom "by His power, for His glory."

"Have you asked God to show you His Kingdom activity?" Dr. Hemphill asked. "God's agenda is that every tribe, tongue and nation on earth would know him."

(More on Dr. Hemphill and his ministry from www.empoweringkingdomgrowth.net):

Empowering Kingdom Growth is an initiative designed to call individual Southern Baptists to renew their passion for the Lord Jesus and the reign of His kingdom in their hearts, families, and churches from which God can forge a spiritual movement marked by holy living, sacrificial service and global witness.

Dr. Hemphill comes to EKG from his most recent position as the president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, TX. In addition to having served since 1994 at Southwestern, Dr. Hemphill has served as the director of the Southern Baptist Center for Church Growth and in pastoral positions in Virginia, Kentucky, and North Carolina. Dr. Hemphill has doctoral degrees from both Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and Cambridge University.

The author of many books, which include, among others: "The Prayer of Jesus", "Names of God", "got life?" and evangelistic material, "Revitalizing the Sunday Morning Dinosaur", "The Antioch Effect", and "Life Answers: Making Sense of Your World." Dr. Hemphill has made a significant contribution to Christian life in America today.

Dr. Morris H. Chapman, President of the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention, said Dr. Hemphill has the "scholarly mind of a theologian, the passion of an evangelist and the heart of a pastor."

The answer to the question of why he left a post at the "world's largest seminary to take another task" is simple, he said: "The will of God and the work of God."
