Dr. Kenneth Keathley leads campus revival services

by Al Quartemont

At Guinn Auditorium Tuesday through Thursday

He is no stranger to Louisiana.

Dr. Kenneth Keathley, currently the Dean of Graduate Studies and Professor of Theology at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C., spent nearly six year at New Orleans Baptist Seminary. That is, until Hurricane Katrina forced him and his family to flee north.

But Dr. Keathley is back in Louisiana this week, ministering to students, faculty and staff at Louisiana College as part of the annual Spring Revival Services.

Dr. Keatley has authored several books, including his latest, Salvation and Sovereignty: A Molinist Approach, in which he addresses the "concurrent" truths of God's sovereignty and man's responsibility. For more on Dr. Keathley, visit his website at: www.theologhyforthechurch.com

Here is a breakdown of what Dr. Keathley spoke about in each revival service:

Tuesday: "Asleep In The Electric Chair"

In Tuesday's message, Dr. Keathley used Acts 12:1-5 as his text, looking at "a tale of two men," the Apostle Peter and Herod Agrippa. Dr. Keathley said the two men "typify" the human race - having two paths from which to chose.

"It's better to be a believer on death row than it is to be a king in a palace and not know God," Dr. Keathley said.

He pointed out three Peter possessed - three things Herod knew nothing about

1) The refuge of prayer - "What's marvelous about being a believer is we can talk to God," Dr. Keathley said. "Things that would not otherwise happen will happen when we pray."

2) The peace of God - "Peter was asleep on the eve of his execution - he was asleep in the electric chair," Dr. Keathley said. "The church showed its faith in praying all night. Peter showed his faith by sleeping all night. As Christians, we can enjoy the peace of God which surpasses all understanding."

3) God, Himself, is really involved in our lives - "What is going on (in God's deliverance of Peter from jail) is a magnificent picture of the church itself - a mixture of the ordinary and the extraordinary," Dr. Keathley said. "Even the mundane things of life will have an eternal perspective to it... But once in a while, the gate will open by itself."

Wednesday: "The Wheat and the Weeds."

Using the parable of the wheat and the tares from Matthew 13:24-30, spoke about how our society is quickly losing the awareness of man's appointment with God in a final day of judgment - and the corresponding loss of any fear of God.

Dr. Keathley said events like Haiti, Hurricane Katrina or the Tsunami that struck Indonesia are reminders that we live in a world under judgment and that there is a "reckoning day coming." He said that the fact that this judgment hasn't happened yet is a delay purposed by God for the sake of the righteous. But, he added that it would be a mistake to think that this delay means no judgment is coming.

"There is coming a day when you and God will meet and both of you will be revealed for who you really are," Dr. Keathley said. "Judgement will be the revelation of humanity... and revelation will be the revelation of God."

"The only place that is safe (from God's coming judgment) is Calvary," he added. "It's the only place on earth that has already been touched."

Thursday: "Abraham's Final Exam"

In his final message, Dr. Keathley posed this question, "In the worst of times, can you still believe God is as good as He says He is and still obey Him?"

In using the example of Abraham in Isaac from Genesis 22:1-8, Dr. Keathley expounded how Abraham was tested by God, how Abraham responded in a swift, steadfast and confident way, and how God rewarded Abraham.

"Abraham is not a picture of a super saint with super faith," Dr. Keathley said. "But he is a picture of real faith!"

"God is dedicated to you and He is happy to spend the rest of your life conforming you to the image of Christ."
