FCA serving students at LC

Group is for more than just athletes

It's a Sunday night at LC's Granberry Conference Center. A small group is gathered to study the Bible and to pray. Welcome to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Started in 2004 by the since-graduated Kris Lee, FCA has grown from just a handful of students that first year to a consistent group of 20 to 25 every week.

"It's uniquely suited for Louisiana College because this is one of the only places in the state that has a student that leads it from top to bottom," said Will Larry, the student who serves as LC's director of FCA. "Everyone else has a paid sponsor or staff member. It's a lot for a student, but God does a lot for (me)."

Larry has filled the leadership role started by Lee and has continued the program which has served as a church away from home for most of the students who attend regularly. From a variety of backgrounds, not all the students are involved in athletics and many of them are at different points in their Christian experience.

"I have students that are starting to walk in Christ, students that are veterans... and just some that are getting there," Larry said. "It's a unique and good group of kids.

Besides meeting to pray and worship, students involved in FCA take part in community service projects. They're also part of the larger events FCA sponsors such as "Fields of Faith" and the FCA Retreat.

The group meets once a week - on Sunday nights at 7:40 p.m., or as is the case this week, on Wednesday because of last week's Easter break. They also try to have a "fun event" once a month.

LC communications instructor Scot Loyd serves as faculty adviser, and the group calls on pastors from around the community to minister to the group.

Through it all, Larry has seen students involve grow stronger in their faith.

"They do open up, Larry said. "I've seen some students come a long way, a long way."
