Follow the Star: Where LC’s critical thinking and passionate faith connect

by Vanessa Lopez

Students share their thoughts on the annual event

This year marked the third consecutive year that Louisiana College presented Follow the Star, which tells the story of Christ’s birth, and allows both the students and faculty to interact together while they shared the true meaning of the Christmas season with the community.

Each division of the college was given a scene from the Christ story. The Division of Humanities’ was given the scene where Mary and Joseph are met by a Centurion soldier reading the proclamation, where upon they learn that they have a very long and arduous journey before them.

Jill Reid, Associate Professor of English, said that the first year LC presented Follow the Star was also her first semester teaching. “Coordinating the scene that year marked my understanding of the closeness shared between faculty, staff, and students at Louisiana College,” Reid said. “This year's program was especially enjoyable to me because I was able to work so closely with many of the students who are English majors in our department. I loved being a part of the experience of watching them have fun in their costumes, learn lines, and brave the cold weather while group after group came to watch our Centurion soldier read his proclamation in Greek.”

Jodi Martin, a junior English major, said that one of the more enjoyable aspects of being part of Follow the Star was seeing the children from the community enjoy in the Christ story. “I think, for me, one of the most amazing things about this experience is getting to see the children from the community see the story of the birth of our Lord and Savior come to life before their eyes," Martin said.

According to Reid, “Having the opportunity to interact with the students outside of the classroom under the common goal of representing the College, Christ, and the community in a positive way has become one of my favorite parts of the Christmas season.”

Eric Goodman, a freshman history and theatre double major, was part of the following scene, where he played the roll of the comical inn keeper. "This year's Follow the Star was a great success, in my opinion," Goodman said. "The crowd was very receptive to the message we tried to convey, and I think that it will be a tradition that will continue at Louisiana College for many years to come."

Follow the Star allows all of Louisiana College to come together during the holidays and help share in the true spirit of the season - something graduating senior Amye Segura said she will always hold a a special memory.

“This is what I’m going to miss most about LC," Segura said. "It’s events like these that demonstrate the very essence of what Louisiana College stands for, because Follow the Star truly epitomizes the connecting of critical thinking and passionate faith. And being able to share that with the community is a really amazing feeling.”
