LC students come to Career Fair with resumes, high hopes

It’s feeding time at the zoo. Those who are hungriest get the first bite and those who wait get only bread crumbs. It’s survival of the fittest put to it’s most vigorous test and every animal is waiting to strike.

The site of the zoo was Granberry Conference Center and the animals were the Louisiana College students.

LC put on its annual Career Fair March 11th, presenting the students with such lustrous job offers so tantalizing they could sink their teeth into them.

The students put on their best bibs, with men dressed in suits and ties, and women in dresses and business attire.

Dr Peggy Pack, head of Student Development, emphasized how important the fair is to insuring an easy transistion for students.

“It helps the students look for perspective and see where their futures are headed,” Pack said, “It also helps the employers meet students for possible recruitment opportunities”.

Over 40 businesses showed up to LC for the fair, looking like children coming to the zoo for the first time with their hearts set on seeing that one particular animal.

“It’s a great opportunity for us," said Jeff Franklin, representative for the City of Alexandria. "Students are looking for jobs and we want to be a part of it."

Connie Synnott, also with City of Alexandria, weighed in: “We enjoy coming to colleges like LC. Its great that we’re able to come to events like this to see students’ criteria and see if they we can fit their needs and vice versa”.

Lori Geiger, an RN at Rapides Regional Medical Center, said the career fair gives local businesses the unique opportunity of communicating on campus with students.

“It’s wonderful to come to a high school or a college and be able to talk to those who are interested in your field,” Geiger said, “The more you find out about the student, the better you can understand them”.

Geiger has been in the medical field for 18 years, earning her degree from Northwestern State University, but she said she never had it easy.

“I came from a big family, so money was tight and going away to school in another state was out of the question,” she said.

As feeding time ended, I watched the animals slowly move back to their cages. Some boasting proudly with full stomachs, others left only to wonder what could have been.

Fortunately, though, the animals will have another chance to stake their claim.

“I think it was very successful”, said Christy Roux, executive assistant and career fair coordinator. “We’ll do it again next year and hope for even more vendors”.
