Haitian earthquake causes Louisiana Baptists to respond

by Sarah Hudson

Fourteen member medical team will provide relief to earthquake victims Feb. 20-28.

Upon hearing about the needs in Haiti after the recent earthquake, Chief of Security at Louisiana College, Dwayne Rogers, put together a 14-person medical mission team to provide relief.

On Feb. 20-28, the team of medical professionals from across the state will travel to Jimani, Dominican Republic to provide aid at the Good Samaritan Hospital.

Jimani was not directly affected by the earthquake, but is on the Haitian border where many of the injured have crossed to receive medical treatment.

"There is a large need in Jimani," Rogers said. "The infrastructure in Haiti was badly damaged so they had to move people out."

This will be Rogers' second trip to the Dominican Republic and he has ministered in several other disaster stricken areas, including Indonesia after the 2005 tsunami.

"It always amazes me how God puts teams such as this together," Rogers said. "I had initially mentioned it on facebook...after that I can't tell you how, other than God."

Rogers only had 14 spots to fill, but had many more interested in going. On the day of the final deadline, just enough people had backed out to leave 14 people with passports and money, ready to minister.

"It was God's hand at work," Rogers said.

The team's mission will be to meet both physical and spiritual needs.

"It will be from taking care of medical needs to just putting our arms around somebody and allowing them to tell their story," Rogers said. "People just need to talk about it and want somebody to listen."

Saturday, Feb. 6, the team met at Zoar Baptist Church in Central, La. for Disaster Relief Training and a team meeting.

Charles Watson led the training and explained the importance of helping during a time of need and the impact that this can have on the world for the cause of Christ.

"Jesus told us to do it, and that us why we do it," Rogers said about the motivation behind forming this team.

Rogers and his team are prepared to be flexible in going wherever there is a need and many of the details for the trip have not yet been finalized.
