Lady Cats survive second half scare to win 10th straight

by Craig Kaufman

ETBU charge falls short

With nationally ranked Louisiana College women’s basketball ahead by as many as 13 points in the first half, Thursday’s contest between the Lady Wildcats and East Texas Baptist University looked as though it would be over early. The pesky Lady Tigers of ETBU would not go away easily, though, and LC was fortunate to stave off a second-half comeback and escape with a 64-58 victory.

The Lady Cats distributed their offensive production as they won their tenth straight game and kept their home record spotless. LC had four players in double-digit scoring, led by Voneshia Williams who scored 15 points, including 11 in the first half as the Lady Cats seized and built an early advantage.

Christy Pantallion went eight for thirteen from the field to score 14 points in the game. Pantallion also dished out seven assists. Tillisha Givens grabbed 12 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end of the floor, and scored 11 points of her own.

LC point guard Briana Lewis went three for three from behind the three point line before fouling out late in the game. Lewis’s third three-pointer came in a second-half opening run that saw the Lady Cats extended their lead to 16, their biggest of the night.

As the second half wore on, the visiting Lady Tigers chipped away at Louisiana College’s lead, thinning it from 11 at half to just four with less than two minutes left to play on a lay-up by Karlee Wilson.

Wilson had 13 of her 16 points in a second half in which ETBU shot nearly 60 percent from the field. Ashley Featherston had all of her 11 points after the break for the Lady Tigers.

Four was as close as the visitors could get, however, as they were called for an offensive foul to turn the ball over with twenty seconds remaining. Turnovers plagued ETBU all evening, as they gave up the ball 28 times, ten more than the host Lady Wildcats.

Louisiana College, who will host LeTourneau on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., sees their record improve to 18-2 overall, with a 14-2 mark at the top of the American Southwest Conference East division. ETBU falls to 9-8 in conference, and their overall record runs even at 11-11. The Lady Tigers will travel to Mississippi College this weekend.
