Lady Wildcats advance to D3 Regional Championship

by Al Quartemont

Need one more win to advance to World Series

The Louisiana College women's softball team is one win away from advancing to the Division III World Series after two convincing wins Saturday in their home stadium in Pineville.

LC defeated Mississippi College 6-2 to end the Lady Choctaws' season and then topped Southwestern (Texas) 10-2 to advance to the championship game of the regional. LC would need to win only once Sunday and would have lose twice to not advance to Eau Claire for the World Series. LC will play at 3 p.m. against either East Texas Baptist, Texas-Tyler or Southwestern.

Here is how the Lady Wildcats did Saturday (Courtesy LC Sports Information):

Game 5: Louisiana College 6, Mississippi College 2

The Lady Wildcats handed the Lady Choctaws a season-ending defeat in the first game of the Saturday session of the Pineville NCAA Division III Softball regional.
Louisiana College center fielder Jodi Montagnino, already the school's single-season home run record holder, connected on her 11th homer of the year in the first inning to jumpstart the LC offense, a 2-run shot giving the Lady Cats the 2-0 lead.

The Lady Wildcats went on to score three more runs in the third and a run in the fifth en route to the win.

For the second time in as many days, junior pitcher Rene' Schwartzenburg picked up a regional win, following her two-hitter in the tournament opener Friday afternoon with a seven strikeout, three-hit gem on Saturday.

Game 7: Louisiana College 10, Southwestern 2

The Lady Wildcats stamped their ticket to the NCAA Division III Championship game with a 10-2 win over the Southwestern Pirates.

LC, which is yet to lose in the Pineville Regional will take on whoever remains among Southwestern, Texas-Tyler and East Texas Baptist Sunday at 3 p.m. and will have two chances to win one game and advance to the Division III World Series in Wisconsin next week.

Saturday night against Southwestern, the Lady Wildcats were paced on offense by Ashleigh Clement and Jodi Montagnino, both of whom connected on home runs, Clement in the first and Montagnino in the sixth.

Junior Kelly Williams picked up the win, pitching seven innings and striking out three.

Southwestern will face an elimination game against either Texas-Tylet or ETBU at 1 p.m. Sunday.
