Lady Wildcats off to Oregon (VIDEO)

LC team leaves Wednesday morning for George Fox

The group was small, but spirited. They wanted to send off their team the right way.

To chants of, "Go Cats, go," the LC Lady Wildcats basketball team emerged from the H.O. West Field House facility at 10 a.m. Wednesday morning, took time to hug and shake hands, took time to gather for prayer, and then hopped on a bus headed to New Orleans.

From their, the Lady Cats would fly to Denver and on to Portland before finally driving to their final destination of Newberg, Ore., home of George Fox University.

"We're excited," said LC senior guard Joanna Tate. "This is a very good opportunity. They're a good team, but we are, too."

The records speak for themselves on that point. As the defending National Champions of Division III, George Fox is currently ranked number four in the nation. In the latest USA Today D3 poll, LC checked in at number 15. Based on that, it seems odd that in a field of 64 teams, two of the top 15 would meet in the first round, but the Lady Wildcats seemed undeterred by the task ahead.

"That's just more motivation for us," said junior forward Tillisha Givens. "It's going to be a really good game."

"When I found out, I was shocked," said LC coach Janice Joseph-Richard. "But the more I thought about it and the more I prayed about it, God brought to me, 'hey, let's start with the top ones first and knock the bigger ones down.'"

Coach Richard did mention a few of her players were a little more rattled by the prospect of having to fly across the country as a number of them have never flown before. But she pointed out to them her first plane trip. It was the year she led the Lady Wildcats to the NAIA National Tournament.

"It's a day I'll never forget, and we're going to be making memories today they'll take with them for a lifetime," Richard said.

The Lady Wildcats and George Fox will tip off at approximately 9 p.m. Central Time on Friday.
