LC Baseball keeps playoff hopes alive

Sweep of LeTourneau revives struggling season

PINEVILLE – The Louisiana College Wildcats needed a sweep of LeTourneau in the worst way. They got just that - with authority.

LC swept a doubleheader from LeTourneau Saturday, 18-2 and 17-7, to complete their first three-game sweep of the year, improve to 14-21 overall and 7-8 in the American Southwest Conference East Division and keep their postseason hopes alive.

It was LC’s best offensive weekend of the year and, over the course of three games, the Wildcats scored 48 runs on 59 hits.

The sweep over the Yellow Jackets (11-25, 2-13) means that the Wildcats can clinch a spot in the ASC Tournament by taking 2-of-3 from Texas Dallas at home next weekend.

In the interim, LC will have one tune-up game, on the road at 3 p.m. this Tuesday at LeTourneau, a non-conference contest.

LC wasted no time jumping on the Yellow Jackets in game one, scoring six runs on seven hits in the first inning.

It was so nice for LC in the first frame that the Wildcats ran the LeTourneau starting pitcher, Jeremy Burke, after just 2/3 of an inning and LC lead-off hitter Cody Laprarie (Dry Prong, La./Grant High) got two hits, a run scored and an RBI.

Laprarie finished game one 4-for-5 with one run scored, two doubles and five RBI.

The Wildcats had another big inning in the third posting three runs on four hits to build a 9-1 lead and capped the game with seven runs on five hits in the seventh.

All nine of the Wildcats starting batters hit safely at least once.

Among the top batters for LC in the first half of Saturday’s doubleheader were Brandt Daigle (Alexandria, La./Alexandria Senior High), who went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI, and Jonathan Ettinger (Vicksburg, Miss./Warren Central High), who went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and four driven in.

Also providing offense for LC were Mike Doughty (Crowley, La./Crowley High), with three RBI, and Steven Davis (Monroe, La./Ouachita Parish High), with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate with three runs scored and one driven in.

Jon Michael Kidd (West Monroe, La./West Monroe High) went 2-for-2 on the day with two runs scored and one RBI.

Freshman lefty Anthony VanGessel (Tioga, La./Tioga High) pitched a complete game and improved to 4-3 on the year pitching seven innings, allowing eight hits and just one earned run while striking out three and walking three.

In game two, the hits (and runs) just kept on coming for the Wildcats, who went ahead 5-1 after just one inning of play thanks in large part to a three-run homerun by catcher Chris Waguespack (Destrehan, La./St. Charles Catholic).

LC would go on to score two runs in the second, one in the third, six in the fourth, one in the sixth and two in the eighth, en route to the win, a victory that went to senior Dustin Tubre (West Monroe, La./West Monroe High) who pitched 4 1/3 innings in relief of starter Hunter King (Covington, La./Covington High).

In game two, the unquestioned star was Bowman, who had a career day going 5-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBI.

Ettinger went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two driven in while Cole Bishop (Ruston, La./Ruston High) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI and Ryan Lavergne (Opelousas, La./Opelousas Catholic) went 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.

LeTourneau’s Jeremy Burke and Jay Lutz were the respective losing pitchers in games one and two.
