LC baseball, softball prepare for post-season

by LC Sports Information

Playoff and tournament play this week

Louisiana College sports fans will have plenty to follow this week as both the baseball and softball teams participate in the conference's post-season action.

Baseball:

For the LC baseball team, they'll be heading to Abilene, Texas for their American Southwest Conference first-round series against Hardin-Simmons this Friday and Saturday.

Game one will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday with game two to be played at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Should a decisive third game be needed, it would be played Saturday as well.

Admission will be $5 for adults and $3 for students, daily. Louisiana College enters the series as the No. 3 seed out of the ASC's East Division. Hardin-Simmons is the No. 2 seed out of the ASC West.

Softball

Louisiana College, Texas-Tyler, East Texas Baptist, Mary Hardin-Baylor, Concordia Texas and Hardin-Simmons each finished in one of the top three spots in their respective divisions and will battle for the conference title at the double-elimination 2010 American Southwest Conference Softball Championship Tournament, to be held Thursday-Saturday (April 29-May1) for the first time at Railroad Park in Lewisville, Texas.

LC, 35-5 overall and seeded second in the ASC East, will play its first game on the first day of the tournament when it takes on ASC West No. 3 Hardin-Simmons at 6 p.m. Thursday night.

For the third straight year, all games in the double-elimination tournament will be available for fans through live statistics. Saturday’s championship game will again be broadcasted with live audio. All links can be found on the conference’s website.

Defending champion Texas-Tyler (35-5) and Mary Hardin-Baylor (25-15) each received first-round byes because of winning division titles and will wait until Friday to play. Head coach Mike Reed’s Patriots went 20-4 in divisional play to claim their first-ever ASC East title and enter the tournament on a 13-game winning streak. Head coach Kasey Blomquist’s Cru went 21-3 in conference play to hoist their third ASC West title in four seasons – fifth overall – and enter as winners of 17 of their last 20 ballgames.

Texas-Tyler will open at 11 a.m. on the Gold Field against Thursday’s 6 p.m. tilt between West Division No. 2 seed Concordia Texas (24-14) and East Division No. 3 seed East Texas Baptist (29-9), also taking place on the Gold Field.

UMHB will begin at 11 a.m. on the Blue Field against the victor of Thursday’s 6 p.m. game between East No. 2 seed Louisiana College (35-15) and West No. 3 seed Hardin-Simmons (24-11), also on the Blue Field.

Other start times will be at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday. The championship game is slated for 2 p.m. on Saturday, with an “if necessary” game to follow 30 minutes after.

Returning all-tournament selections from 2009 are MVP Stacy Shepherd and Whitney Wyly of Texas-Tyler, Mary Alice Roy and Rene Schwartzenburg of Louisiana College, Ayrika Henderson and Alicia Wright of East Texas Baptist, and Cera Beasley and Amy Meyer of Hardin-Simmons.
