LC begins new tradition with December graduation ceremony

by Al Quartemont

More than 100 graduates receive degrees

At a college where tradition is valued, a tradition was broken, but with good reason.

On Saturday, Dec. 12, Louisiana College held its first-ever winter commencement ceremony. 30 students received their undergraduate degrees and 83 their Masters of Arts in teaching. Thus, a new tradition has begun at LC, one made necessary by the college’s recent growth in enrollment.

“LC is proud of these graduates,” said school president, Dr. Joe Aguillard. “Not only for what they’ve accomplished but for what they will accomplish when they leave this campus and go out into the world.”

Aguillard described the graduation ceremony as a “worship service” with perhaps the most poignant moment coming when graduating senior, Cameron Weatherford, led a five-man ensemble in a version of “Amazing Grace” as faculty member Neil Johnston accompanied on the bagpipes.

The chair of LC’s Board of Trustees, Dr. Jonathan Forrester, himself a graduate of the school, called it an “exciting day” for the fact mid-year graduates would no longer have to wait until May to participate in the ceremony.

“I would admonish you today… that you purpose in your heart to obey the Lord and be a person of integrity and character,” Forrester told the graduates. “There will be hardships and failures, and there will be tough times to come. But endure and prosper and God will have His hand upon you.”

The commencement address for the ceremony was given by U.S. Congressman Rodney Alexander. The Republican from the 5th District specifically addressed the graduates on how they might work to make the future better for those who come behind them.
“The more we can do to help those who need help, the better off we are,” Alexander said. “The Christian attitude that is prevalent on this campus is something that I encourage you to take and spread across this land. We need it today more than we’ve ever needed it in the past.”
