LC celebrates National Foreign Language Week

by Wildcat Staff

Chance to recognize students for superior scholarship

EDITOR'S NOTE: This week is National Foreign Language Week. The 2009-2010 AMG officers will be submitting several articles throughout the week to raise awareness about foreign language education and about the honor society.

By Mason Hess

The Zeta Gamma chapter of Alpha Mu Gamma (AMG), the national collegiate foreign language honor society, recognizes its Louisiana College student members for superior scholarship in foreign language studies.

The membership criterion is based upon national standards set by AMG. The honor society currently has seven associate members as well as three full members.

The AMG executive officers and Faculty sponsor, Cécile Barnhart, select potential inductees based on academic performance in foreign language classes and in foreign language degree programs. The LC Humanities Department current offers a major and minor in French, a minor in Spanish, and elementary-level German courses.

AMG will be hosting a cultural event on the LC campus sometime in mid-April, 2010 and will be sending out invitations to students qualifying for membership by mid-March.

In past years, the Humanities Department, in particular the foreign language professors and foreign language students, have traveled to various Louisiana cities to attend performances by Cirque du Soleil.

In addition, in fall 2009, several humanities majors traveled with Mme Barnhart to Baton Rouge to attend a speaking event featuring a prominent French sociologist who presented a paper on trends in religiosity in the United States and in France.

Louisiana College is also a participating member of the Consortium on the Development of French in Louisiana (Conseil pour le développement du français en Louisiane) which hosts numerous annual French cultural events throughout the state and sponsors several annual study-abroad programs in Canada, France, and Belgium focusing on francophone studies.

Within the last two years, three French majors at Louisiana College have received scholarships to study French cultural as well as the French language in Belgium.
