The Louisiana College Debate team has been busy this semester. Most recently they competed at the LSUS tournament where Andrew Dufour and Lucas Moncada were both quarter finalists in the professional division. In the varsity division, Jesus Carrillo and Dustin Carter were octa-finalists; with Carter achieving a perfect 6-0 in preliminary rounds.

Earlier in the month, the squad competed at the LSUA tournament which, according to debate coach Scot Loyd, “was a very good tournament for LC.” Loyd went on to say that, “they won it all in two divisions and took third in the tournament sweeps, which is a combined total of points prior to the elimination rounds.” At LSUA, Carrillo ended up champion in the novice division, and Amanda Graves was a semi finalist. In varsity division, Eric Puckett was a quarter finalist and Dustin Carter and Zach Veuleman were octa-finalist. In Professional debate, Loyd was a quarter-finalist and third speaker overall, while LC Alum, Kris Lee, who now works for U.S. Senator David Vitter, returned to compete with his former teammates and won champion of that division.

With several tournaments left to complete the season, Loyd is pleased with the performance of his team so far. “The LC debate team has had an outstanding semester in terms of both participation and winning,” noted Loyd. “Already this season we have had two overall champions in two different divisions and have been in second place in the season-long points race.” Loyd adds that the team is looking “to continue winning in the second half of our season.” The debate team will go on to compete in several tournaments next semester, including the LSU Mardi Gras Tournament, the BPCC Eddy Shell Invitational and the Henderson State University Tournament.
