LC Debaters set for Texas-sized weekend

by Derek Latz

Coming off 3rd-place finish at BPCC

The clicking of keyboards. The scratching of paper. The mending and meshing of minds.

This is the sound of debate, where the mental muscle is put to its most vigorous tests. The ability of debaters to acquire information in an hour, about a subject they found out a minute ago, takes determination, diligence, and delivery.

Louisiana College students know about this all too well.

The Louisiana College Debate Team participated in its final debate of February, taking home third place at the Eddy Shell Tournament held at Bossier Parish Community College.

Novice debaters, senior Courtney Hamilton and freshman Josh Engen, varsity debater sophomore Jesus Carrillo, and professional debater and team coach Scot Loyd broke through for LC, with Carrillo getting to the semi-finals before losing to eventual varsity champion Jeremy Coffman of Sam Houston State.

“We’ve got third place locked down," said Loyd. "Now we need to see if we can catch up and get second place.”

LC’s team debaters wouldn’t be outdone though, as the teams of sophomore Dustin Carter and junior Thomas Elliott and Carrillo and freshman Joseph Buzzetta made it through to the quarter-finals.

The tournament had added meaning this year, with the sister of Edwin Shell in attendance to hand out the first ever Edwin Shell Trophy. The trophy is awarded to the school with the highest record from last year and this year. Louisiana State University-Shreveport was the recipient with a record of 432 wins.

LC Debate will now go on the road for the team's last three debates, the first coming up this weekend at Sam Houston State. The tournament, titled “Everything’s Bigger in Texas Swing," will take place March 5-7, but unlike the previous tournaments LC has participated in, this one will test the mental endurance of the team.

The schedule calls for six single debates and starts Friday afternoon. The endurance part comes in with outrounds starting the next day, then six more debates with the next outrounds ending Sunday.

LC debaters have extra motivation going into the tournament, as the best five speakers are awarded Texas-sized belt buckles for trophies.

The final two debates will both take place at UCA March 12-14 and 26-29.
