Much hard work and preparation went into having all eight Christmas scenes ready for Louisiana College’s third annual Follow the Star.

The event took place on LC’s campus Thursday at 6 p.m., with Friday evening being cancelled due to icy weather.

Follow the Star featured a variety of events including a campus walk-through reenactment of the Christmas story, an art sale and children’s activities.

In preparation for the event, Dr. Charles Lowe, chair of the Division of Human Behavior at LC, worked countless hours along with other faculty, staff and students.

“Every year we have to put the sets up for all eight scenes with the help of a construction crew and anybody we can find willing to help,” Lowe said.

Ronnie LaLande served as construction crew chief for each scene.

“We even had stable animals for the production that were taken care of by some of the LC faculty,” Dr. Lowe said.

Each scene was set strategically on LC’s campus to enable an efficient walk-through of the Christmas story, and after the eighth scene guests were served hot chocolate.

“This was a faculty, staff and student celebration,” said Lowe. “Every scene included each who worked together to make this happen.”

Thursday night also included the official lighting of the campus.

Beforehand, Danny McVay and other staff members at LC worked together to put up thousands of lights to decorate the campus. Cleco brought their bucket truck in to help with hanging the lights, and the city of Pineville helped to hang wreaths around campus.

“As you can see, this was a total community effort,” said Lowe. “It was done by LC and the community in order to give back to the people of Central Louisiana.”

Community choirs, both children and adult, from all over the state, sang in front of Alexandria Hall to provide entertainment while people waited to walk through.

Costumes were needed for each scene in the production. Judy Packer worked to get all costumes made with the help of Campers for Christ, a group of Christian RV travelers who enjoy fellowship and serving Christ while on the road.

Linda Billingsly, Karen Watkins, Teri Philpot and Carla Jowers were all team leaders who helped to “organize each scene with leaders and make it all work,” said Lowe.

In LC’s Hixon Student Center there were activities and crafts for children teaching them about the birth of Christ.

The last scene of Follow the Star included two trees—the Christmas tree and the cross. The purpose was to show the difference between the two and send an evangelistic message out to the community.

“This tree, that tree—the focus of what we’re trying to announce to the community and world is about Christ and what he did for the world,” said Lowe.

The efforts of the Louisiana College campus in Follow the Star were the same as its purpose.

“To share with the community and give back to the community,” said. Lowe. “To share the hope and joy that we have during the holiday season.”
