LC hoops teams wrap up homestand with pair of wins

by Wildcat Staff

Off to Ozarks, UT-Dallas next

The Louisiana College men's and women's basketball teams capped a two-game homestand with a pair of wins over LeTourneau Saturday at H.O. West Field House.

The wins were important for both teams as the Lady Wildcats maintain their two-game in the loss column edge on UT-Dallas in the American Southwest Conference East Division race, and the LC men remain in third in ASC East with the win. Here's a recap of both teams' games this past week.

LC Women:

Saturday: LC 95, LeTourneau 55

The Louisiana College women extended their home winning streak to 35 games Saturday, defeating American Southwest Conference opponent LeTourneau 95-55.

Louisiana College (18-2, 15-1 ASC) has not lost a game at home, the H.O. West Field House) since Jan. 31, 2009.

The game was close in the first half as LeTourneau (11-10, 7-10 ASC) trailed LC just 37-33 at the break. The Lady Cats, however, went on a 58-22 run in the second half to secure the convincing win.

LC forced 48 turnovers on the night, 25 by virtue of a steal, with 58 points resulting.

Senior guard Roslyn Wilmer (Marksville, La./Marksville HS) led all scorers with 23 and was among six Lady Cats to score nine points or more in the game. Junior forward Natosha Gottlieb (Alexandria, La./Bolton HS) scored 12 while freshman forward Kala Chenier (Bossier City, La./Calvary Baptist Academy) and junior guard Shaina Howard (Scott, La./Acadiana HS) put up 10 apiece.

Freshmen Keana Frank (Elton, La./Kinder HS) and Danisha Allison (Oakdale, La./Oakdale HS) scored nine points apiece but put up solid numbers across the score sheet.
Frank, a 5-foot guard, made eight steals and dished out six assists while Allison, a forward, pulled 14 rebounds in the contest.

LeTourneau was led by DeShante Thomas, who put up a 12-point, 18-rebound double-double.

LC returns to action Thursday night with a road trip to ASC opponent Ozarks.

Thursday: LC 90, Texas-Tyler 82

The first time the Louisiana College women played Texas-Tyler, the Lady Cats had to eek out a tough victory on the road. When the Patriots visited LC, it was no less difficult. In the end, LC walked away with a well-earned 90-82 win.

The Lady Cats (17-2, 14-1 ASC) outscored Texas-Tyler (9-11, 6-10 ASC) 39-34 in the first half and 51-48 in the second.

Senior guard Roslyn Wilmer (Marksville, La./Marksville HS) finished with 22 points and nine rebounds to lead the Lady Cats in scoring but it was junior forward Natosha Gottlieb (Alexandria, La./Bolton HS) who stole the show.

Gottlieb scored 15 points, pulled 10 rebounds, made eight steals, dished out two assists and blocked one shot in the contest.

Freshman forward Danisha Allison (Oakdale, La./Oakdale HS) added an 11-point, 12-rebound double-double.

Texas-Tyler was paced by Melissa Thomas with 22 points and six rebounds.

LC Men

Saturday: LC 71, LeTourneau 56

PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana College men got a much-needed American Southwest Conference win Saturday, downing LeTourneau 71-56 at home to keep pace in the race for the conference tournament.

LC (7-11, 7-9 ASC) is current battling with Texas-Tyler and Mississippi College for the third and fourth slots in the American Southwest Conference’s East Division, the final two berths in the ASC tournament at the end of the month.

On Saturday, the Wildcats outscored LeTourneau (3-15, 2-12 ASC) 46-34 to pull away with the win in what was the largest margin of victory for LC this season. It was also the Wildcats’ best overall team effort as four LC players reached double figures.

Senior wing Jarrod Jackson (Albany, La./Albany HS) led all scorers with 18 to go along with seven boards while junior post Shaun Johnson (Oakdale, La./Oakdale HS) came off the bench to provide 13 points, nine rebounds, six steals and one assists.
The 6-foot-5 Johnson also provided the dagger with a late, two-handed dunk.

Senior Jelani Mitchell (St. Martinville, La./St. Martinville HS) scored 11 points and had six assists and senior post Korey Salmon (Deville, La./Buckeye HS) scored 11 points while pulling eight rebounds, dishing out seven assists, blocking one shot and making two steals.

LeTourneau was led by Trey Perkins who finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

LC returns to action Thursday night with a visit to ASC opponent Ozarks.

Thursday: Texas Tyler 70, LC 59

The Louisiana College men fell behind early and never could quite recover here Thursday night in a 70-59 loss to American Southwest Conference opponent Texas-Tyler.

LC (6-11, 6-9 ASC), which last week defeated Texas-Tyler 75-70 on the road, fell behind by 18 in the first half and, despite pulling within nine several times in the second half, were unable to close the gap.

Texas-Tyler (6-13, 5-10 ASC), on the back of a 16-point, 20-rebound double-double by Darren Houliston, outscored LC 30-20 in the first half and 40-39 in the second and out-rebounded the Wildcats 52-43 on the night.

The Wildcats trailed 25-7 in the first half but mounted a spirited comeback through the next 20-plus minutes of game time.

Midway through the second half, when junior post Shaun Johnson (Oakdale, La./Oakdale HS) threw down a monster dunk over a UTT defender, it looked as though the Wildcats had claimed the momentum but a well-timed three-pointer by Larry Carpenter swung the tide back to Texas-Tyler.

LC finished with three players in double-figures.

Senior post Korey Salmon (Deville, La./Buckeye HS) had a 12-point, 13-rebound double-double while senior point guard Jelani Mitchell (St. Martinville, La./St. Martinville HS) scored 13 and junior wing Danny Sumner (Baton Rouge, La./Central HS) 12.
