LC men, women hold on to defeat rival ETBU

Set to travel to LeTourneau this Saturday

MARSHALL, Texas – Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams of Louisiana College erased halftime deficits to sweep host East Texas Baptist University in American Southwest Conference play on Thursday. The Lady Cats took the first game by a score of 64-51, while the men prevailed 75-69 in the nightcap.

Tillisha Givens (Monroe, La./Ouachita Parish High) and Christy Pantallion (Alexandria, La./Bolton High) scored 18 points apiece to lead the Lady Cats, who trailed most of the first half and found themselves down by two at the break.

Givens and Voneshia Williams (Alexandria, La./Bolton High) led the team with twelve rebounds apiece as the LC improved to 13-2 on the season, and 9-2 in conference play. Williams also added 16 points, and Roslyn Wilmer (Marksville, La./Marksville High) came off the bench to provide nine points and three assists in the victory.

The comeback was not on until 11 minutes left in the second half, when six steals (four by Givens) allowed LC to finally break through and grab a lead, which the Lady Cats continued to build until the final whistle. ETBU guard Satara Harrell led all scorers with 19 points, but that was all the offensive firepower the hosts could muster.

The men’s team got great contributions from their bench, as neither Jarrod Jackson nor Shaun Johnson started for the Wildcats.

Jackson (Albany, La./Albany High) led the team in points with 17, while Johnson (Oakdale, La./Oakdale High) was tops on the boards with nine. Johnson also added 16 points off the pine to match starting forward Chukwuma Ekeh (Alexandria, La./Holy Savior Menard High), as LC overcame a five-point halftime deficit.

Although the Wildcats got out-rebounded 42-33, they came out shooting 67 percent in the second half, including 3-for-7 from behind the three point arc. Jackson and starting guard Jeremy Hollier (Ragley, La./Merryville High) each went 2-for-3 from three point land, but like the women, the Wildcats couldn’t get a hold of the game until less than four minutes remained when back to back threes by Jackson and Daniel Greenhouse put the game out of reach for ETBU.

The LC men are now 7-9, and will try to get back to .500 in conference play (5-6) when they and the Lady Cats travel to LeTourneau on Saturday.
