Successful day at MU's Early Bird Tournament

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Louisiana College softball team, currently ranked No. 3 in the nation, got off to a 2-0 start with wins over No. 14 Christopher Newport and 5-3 over Eastern Mennonite at Methodist University's Early Bird Tournament.

Senior Rene' Schwartzenburg got the win against Christopher Newport, striking out four and walking two while allowing three hits.

The stars of that contest, however, were a trio of Lady Wildcats who belted home runs.

Senior Amber Thomas (Rosepine, La./Rosepine HS) went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run, junior Daniele Wilson (Destrehan, La./Copiah-Lincoln CC) went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run and sophomore Carli Wheeler (Baton Rouge, La./Parkview Baptist) went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run.

Freshman Chelsey Allen (Houma, La./Vandebilt Catholic) went 2-for-2 in the first game.

Against Eastern Mennonite, senior Kelly Williams got the win after striking out eight and walking four while allowing three hits.

Junior Kelsey Brown (Rayne, La./Notre Dame-Crowley/Hinds CC) went 1-for-2 with an RBI, freshman Stephanie Jaeger (Haughton, La./Haughton HS) 2-for-2 with two runs scored and junior Devan Greene (Kaplan, La./Kaplan HS) 1-for-4 with an RBI.

LC will conclude it's participation in the Methodist Tournament on Saturday with a 9 a.m. game against Mary Washington and an 11 a.m. game against No. 11 Salisbury.
