LC Student Government Set For School Year

by

Group sends delegation to Washington, DC

By: Mason H. Hess, 2009-2010 SGA Executive Board secretary and junior class president

The Louisiana College Student Government Association has been preparing for the new school year by electing class representatives and its executive board, distributing funds to student organizations and training its officers to fulfill their duties.

The SGA board members share a confidence regarding their initiatives to strengthen ties with the student body, faculty, and staff on the Louisiana College campus. The board has already allocated funds to the Louisiana College Cheerleading squad and plans to receive further monetary requests in the near future. Because of campus-wide elections, the SGA has filled all necessary and available positions for the first time in several years.

In accordance with these efforts, eight members of the 2009-2010 SGA board traveled to Washington, D.C. from September 23rd through September 28th for the fifth annual American Student Government Association’s National Student Government Summit. It was the ASGA’s largest national summit to date with over 110 institutions from the U.S. and abroad in attendance

It was Louisiana College’s first time to attend as the Office of Student Development and the SGA budget provided the funds for the conference. Those who made the trip included:

Dr. Peggy Pack, Vice President of Student Development and SGA advisor,
Joseph Cole, Executive Assistant to the President,
Cory Mayon, senior class representative and SGA Parliamentarian,
Andrew Dufour, sophomore class representative,
Ron Lindo, delegate at large and SGA Chaplain,
Brian Schaefer, SGA Vice-President,
Brett Schaefer, SGA President,
Mason Hess, junior class president and SGA secretary

The SGA board members attended various seminars, such as:

“Do the Right Thing: Ethics and Your SGA,”
“13 Steps to a Super Student Government,”
“Navigating Diversity on Your Student Government,”
and “Ready to Rumble? How to Engage in ‘Successful’ Conflict.”

Joseph Cole and Dr. Pack attended seminars pertaining to adviser issues and administrative concerns. In addition to seminars, the summit hosted several “roundtable discussions” where the Louisiana College SGA delegates discussed campus issues with peer institutions and fellow SGA board members from around the country.

LC delegates attended numerous discussions including, “Private Institutions (under 2,000 students),” “Improving Relations with Clubs/Organizations,” and “Private Religious Colleges.” The Louisiana College SGA board members hope to apply these practical ideas, leadership training, and organizational strategies to its functions as well as to the Louisiana College campus.

The eight attendees also found time to tour the nation’s capital. The group visited the National Archives to see the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, the National Air and Space Museum, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, the National Gallery of Art, and the U.S. Capital Building. The group also shared many interesting experiences in their navigation of the D.C. metro system.

The SGA Board meets every Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in the Formal Lounge in Granberry Conference Center. All students and organizations are welcome and encouraged to attend. If any student should have a concern or would like to learn more about the Louisiana College Student Government Association, please visit the SGA office in the Hixon Student Center next to Frye Suite.
