LC students give time to Main Street Baptist Mission

by Sarah James

Teaching children in the Pineville community about the love of Christ.

Each Wednesday night, several Louisiana College students find time in their hectic schedules to go to the Main Street Baptist Mission.

Most of the students working with the Mission heard about the need for help when another student spread the word.

“I went one Wednesday with Heather Brinker and I sat in on the class that she teaches,” said Shannon Smith, a senior at LC.

Brinker, a junior at LC, got her start at the mission when Michelle Buzzard, a former LC student, asked for volunteers on Wednesday night to help with over 50 kids. There were very few volunteers at the time.

The Mission is an extension of First Baptist Church Pineville. It meets on Sundays at 10 a.m. and Wednesdays at 6 p.m.

On Wednesday nights, everyone gathers in the sanctuary for an opening prayer and congregational singing before splitting into classes divided by grades.

Several LC students serve as teachers on Wednesday nights.

Anna McGee, a senior at LC, has been working as the high school girl's teacher at the mission for about two months

Most of the children that go to the Mission were not brought up in church. Some of them are not even familiar with basic Bible stories like Jonah and the whale and David and Goliath.

“They don’t really know that much about the Word," McGee said. "When they learn something new you can see them putting the pieces together and how exciting it is to them."

McGee said that working with these kids helps her to remember God’s greatness and it reminds her to appreciate the little things that are so often taken for granted.

Brinker began teaching the first through third grade class last year, and this semester began teaching the seventh and eighth grade girls.

“I have loved every minute of it," Brinker said. "They are hungry for the Word of God, and I’m so humbled that God uses me to bring them His truth."

Smith has been attending the Mission for three weeks and helps Brinker with the seventh and eighth grade girls.

“I really like the kids there," Smith said. "They are funny and I think it’s a good opportunity to hang out with children who may not necessarily have the most positive role models in their life."

The mission is always looking for volunteers who are willing to be servants of Christ, and who enjoy working with others.
