LC students show talents at juried art show.

Chance to give students taste of "the real world."

Bob Howell is a retired faculty member of Louisiana College. But he hasn't lost his touch in recognizing quality artwork.

Howell was asked by LC art instructor Rondall Reynoso to judge the department's annual juried art show, a format in which only one person serves as a judge.

At last week's opening of the show, Howell invited to attend and gave some insight into the purpose of the show and the quality of the students' work.

"It turned out to be an excellent show," Howell said. "The whole purpose of these shows is to show students what it's going to be like as an artist once they get out into the real world."

Howell said this type of show is what the students will compete in regularly once they move on from college whether at the state, regional, or national level.

Howell also said he expected more submissions when he agreed to judge and that made the job harder because he didn't want to include work just to fill spots. Although he stressed the works which were not selected were not left out because of a lack of talent, he said he simply wanted to show a broad range of work. The toughest part of the job was picking the best in show.

"Understand that in a juried show, it's just one person's opinion," Howell said. "(Awarding prizes) is even harder because one you've chosen the show, then you have to decide what's the best piece in the show."

This year, that honor went to LC junior Han Le, who won for her shirt and mirror sculpture. Le is an exchange student from Vietnam.

"I think (Le's) piece was probably the most difficult piece to execute successfully," Howell said. "But you don't give a prize because it was hard to do. The aesthetic quality warranted the prize as well."

Le said the sculpture has meaning on spiritual and psychological levels.

"The mirror is a symbol - a reflection of abstract truth. The mirror does not lie to you," Le said. "The shirt is something you use to cover up yourself. Sometimes people can physically cover up themselves and hide from other people. But they still reflect their image to themselves.

"I spent a lot of time on this work. It reflects myself a lot in this picture as well as the idea. I'll keep going with more like this in the future."

Le said that when she came to LC she thought of art as just visual. Now she sees the philosophical and psychological meaning of it.

"You can't hide yourself," she said.

Howell said one of the challenges of judging a show is knowing not everyone will see it his way.

"As long as they disagree for the right reasons," he said. "That's okay because there will always be a difference in opinions."
