LC to open ASC Tournament against Hardin Simmons

by LC Sports Information

Lady Wildcats to host 7-game, 3-day tournament at H.O. West

Louisiana College will face Hardin-Simmons on Friday in the quarterfinals of the American Southwest Conference women’s basketball tournament.

The tournament will be played Friday through Sunday at LC’s H.O. West Fieldhouse. Daily admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Students of the participating schools will be admitted free with a valid student ID.

Live audio and live video of al tournament games will be available at LCWildcats.net and ASCsports.org.

The winner of the tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament.

The ASC tourney will begin at noon Friday when West champion Mary Hardin-Baylor (20-5 overall, 17-4 ASC) takes on East Texas Baptist (12-13, 10-10), the No. 4 team from the East.

Texas Dallas (19-6, 16-4), the No. 2 team in the East, will take on McMurry (16-9, 13-8), the No. 3 team in the East at 2:30 p.m.

Howard Payne (20-5, 16-5), which finished second in the West, will play Mississippi College (19-6, 14-6), the No. 3 team in the East, at 5 p.m.

No. 18-ranked LC (21-2, 17-2), the only ranked team in the tourney and winner of the East, will face Hardin-Simmons (15-10, 11-9) at 7:30 p.m. in the final game of the quarterfinal session.

LC earned the right to host the ASC tourney by winning the East regular-season title. This will be LC’s fourth appearance in the tourney, but the Lady Wildcats are winless in tourney play.

On the other hand, Hardin-Simmons has the richest tourney history of the eight teams in the field.

The Cowgirls are the only team to appear in all 12 ASC tourneys and have won the event a record seven times.

The tournament streak was in jeopardy this season, but Hardin-Simmons claimed the No. 4 seed in the ASC West – and the final berth in the ASC tourney – with a 90-66 victory over Texas Lutheran on Saturday.

LC and Hardin-Simmons met once this season, with the Lady Wildcats defeating the Cowgirls 63-51 on Nov. 30 at West Fieldhouse.

Freshman center Voneshia Williams had 19 points and nine rebounds to lead LC in that game. Junior forward Tillisha Givens had 17 points and eight rebounds while junior guard Christy Pantallion had 14 points. Junior point guard Briana Lewis had seven assists.

Angela Newcombe and Bo Warm had 12 points each for Hardin-Simmons followed by Kara Looten with 11 points.
