Tillisha Givens leads the way with 26 points, 11 rebounds.

Tillisha Givens scored 26 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as the Louisiana College Lady Wildcats basketball team emerged with an important American Southwest Conference victory. The Lady Cats beat the University of Texas-Dallas Comets 58-47 to take a half-game lead in the ASC East Division.

The Wildcats, 25th ranked in the nation, worked hard all night, led by Givens who pulled in six offensive rebounds. Three of the early boards lead to an immediate six points for the home team.

Givens played all forty minutes, and seemed to be found everywhere the ball was, being a pest to the visitors on both sides of the court. The freshman scorer was a perfect eight for eight from the floor, and ten for thirteen from the foul line.

Defense had been the key in practice all week for Louisiana College, and their hard work on the defensive end led to forced turnovers, blocks, and forced shots from the Comets.

Voneshia Williams grabbed twelve boards of her own as the Lady Cats out-rebounded their opponents 33-23. Williams also scored eleven points, and Christy Pantallion poured in ten of her own.

LC led for most of the contest, nursing a lead around five points in the first half and going into the break with a 33-28 advantage. The second half began with relatively little offense, and Louisiana College led by only two for much of the first ten minutes.

With Texas-Dallas threatening to pull back in the game in the second half, the Wildcats began to press off the inbounds play, and Givens converted a lay-up after Brianna Lewis picked off a pass and went the other way with it.

LC forced another turnover on the next inbound, and continued to put pressure on Texas-Dallas and build their advantage. The hosts would not relinquish this lead, although Texas-Dallas hit four three-pointers in the second half.

Chelsea Edwards scored the first seven points for the visiting Comets, but got into foul trouble and had to sit for most of the second half. Edwards and Tarneisha Scott finished with thirteen points apiece to lead Texas-Dallas.

Rachel Addison scored ten points and led the Comets with six rebounds, but a late three-pointer to pull her team within six was not capitalized on.

The Lady Cats improve to 16-2 and 12-2 in the conference while Texas-Dallas falls to 12-3 in conference play. The Lady Cats will host University of the Ozarks on Saturday afternoon as Louisiana College observes “Think Pink Day” and “Fill the Field House.”
