LC women win, men lose vs. Sul Ross

by Al Quartemont

Will host Howard Payne Saturday to close out '09

The Louisiana College men's and women's basketball teams split their doubleheader with Sul Ross State Thursday at H.O. West Fieldhouse.

The women took the opening game 79-50 against the Lady Lobos, but the LC men could not overcome erratic shooting and a tough Lobo defense, falling 61-51 in the nightcap.

For the Lady Cats, freshman Myshnae Swan led all scorers with 16 points. She added 8 rebounds in 25 minutes while her sister, Danae' Swan added 4 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

In fact, coach Janice Joseph Richard got to play everyone who suited up. The Lady Cats jumped out to a 17-3 lead and then extended that lead to 23-5 on back-to-back 3-pointers from Janet Bulter, her only two baskets of the game. The Lady Cats led 43-17 at halftime and from there, they never looked back.

The LC women improve to 5-1 overall, 3-1 in the American Southwest with Howard Payne coming to the LC campus Saturday for the Lady Cats final game of 2009. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.

As for the the Wildcats, the story of their game was inconsistent play. The Cats shot only 34 percent from the floor, committed 19 turnovers, and watched as the Lobos, who came into the game 0-7 on the season, controlled the pace of the game virtually from start to finish.

LC trailed 25-21 at the half, fell behind by as many as 11 points in the second half, and never could get the run they needed to reverse Sul Ross' lead. The Lobos were led by Andy Hulsey who scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Sull Ross stole the ball 12 times from LC - Anthony Miller had 5 steals and Jimmy Martinez had 4.

About the only success the Wildcats had all night came in the post. Chukwuma Ekeh muscled his way to 16 points and 11 rebounds as well. But LC had a hard time getting him the ball in the blocks. And coupled with the Wildcats' poor shooting outside - just 3-for-16 in 3-point attempts, that spelled a long and frustrating night for the Cats' offense.

LC had the chance to improve its conference record to 4-0. Instead, they'll bring a 3-1 ASC mark into their 2009 finale against Howard Payne Saturday. That game will start at 3 p.m. following the women's game.
