LC’s Coach Dunn leads host of ASC honors for Wildcats

by Wildcat Staff

Several players dot All-ASC roster

LC Football Coach Dennis Dunn led the Wildcats to an 8-2 record and their first-ever Div. III playoff berth this season, and for those accomplishments and other reasons, Dunn was tabbed as American Southwest Conference Co-Coach of the Year along with Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Pete Fredenburg whose Cru went 10-0 with their eight straight conference championship.

Joining Coach Dunn with All-ASC honors were senior receiver Cortland Bell who made the inaugural ASC Outstanding Sportsmen Team of the Year and also an Honorable Mention on offense.

First-Team Offense members for the Wildcats included receiver D'Mario Parker, guard Darin Moore, tackle Jeremy Vujnovich, and running back Ryan Montague.

First-Team Defense members included defensive end Phil Ford, linebacker Nate Janzen and defensive back Brodrick Frederick.

In all, 21 Wildcats were recognized with All-ASC honors.

The rest of the ASC awards are as follows:

Sul Ross State running back Dominique Carson, Mary Hardin-Baylor linebacker Javicz Jones and Texas Lutheran place kicker Allen Cain – all seniors – won player of the year awards to highlight the 2012 American Southwest Conference football awards, the ASC office announced on Thursday (Nov. 15) after a vote of the league’s eight head coaches.

Carson (Waxahachie, Texas / WHS) was named ASC Offensive Player of the Year after earning the league’s rushing title with 1,316 yards over nine games. The 5-foot-5, 165-pound Carson averaged 7.7 yards per carry and ran for 20 touchdowns to guide the nation’s top-rated offense. He had seven 100-plus yard games, including a 319-yard performance in which he accounted for a league-record eight TDs (six rushing, two receiving). Carson also led the conference with 262 all-purpose yards per game (135 more than anyone else) and 28 total TDs (next closest total was 13).

Jones (Katy, Texas / Morton Ranch HS) was named ASC Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season after leading the league with 9.6 tackles per game and scoring four touchdowns and recording a safety. The 6-foot, 200-pound Jones also had six interceptions – tying him for the conference lead – three sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries to help fuel a conference title. In addition, he defended 10 passes and blocked a field goal. In Week 10, Jones became the ASC’s all-time leading tackler, breaking a mark that had stood since 2001.

Cain (San Antonio, Texas / Stevens HS) earned the title of ASC Special Teams Player of the Year after making a league-high 17 field goals, including a 59-yarder that was also tops in the conference. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Cain, who also connected from 55 yards, made all but two of his 46 extra-point attempts. He had a five-FG, four-PAT game without a miss. Cain is the league’s all-time leading field goal kicker with 43 makes over his four-year career. He also handled kickoff duties in 2012, recording a conference-best 29 touchbacks.

Carson, Jones and Cain were all named to the ASC All-Conference First Team.

Mary Hardin-Baylor senior guard Michael Coles (San Antonio, Texas / Stevens HS) and Hardin-Simmons senior lineman Undra Hendrix (Irving, Texas / Ranchview HS) earned offensive and defensive lineman of the year awards, respectively. Coles led a unit that paved the way for a conference-best 315.5 rushing yards per game and allowed a league-low 10 sacks, while Hendrix recorded conference-highs of 12 sacks and 19 tackles for loss.

Texas Lutheran wide receiver Casey Davis (Spring, Texas / SHS) and Hardin-Simmons returner Jessie Ramos (Stamford, Texas / SHS) split freshman of the year honors. Davis hauled in four TD passes and returned a kickoff for a score, while Ramos took back two kickoffs and added seven receiving TDs.

Louisiana College’s Dennis Dunn and Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Pete Fredenburg shared coach of the year honors. Dunn led the Wildcats to an eight-win season and their first at-large berth into the NCAA Division III playoffs, while Fredenburg guided the Cru to a perfect regular season and an eighth-straight conference title.

Cain was also a member of the inaugural ASC Outstanding Sportsmen Team of the Year. He was joined by East Texas Baptist senior defensive back Collin Bieschke (Baytown, Texas / Lee HS), Hardin-Simmons senior defensive lineman Dustin Emery (Bedford, Texas / Euless Trinity HS), Howard Payne senior linebacker J.D. King (Austin, Texas / Texas State), Louisiana College senior wide receiver Cortland Bell (Oakdale, La. / OHS), Mary Hardin-Baylor senior offensive tackle Sam Maxie (Austin, Texas / Bowie HS), Mississippi College senior linebacker Blake Rome (Gramercy, La. / Lutcher HS) and Sul Ross State sophomore running back Brian Thomas (Houston, Texas / Madison HS).
