LC’s “Testify” brings performance to weekly chapel

It wasn't the usual expository preaching service LC students and faculty normally get each Thursday morning. But the message was there nonetheless.

LC's Theater Arts drama team, Testify, brought its own interpretation of biblical passages and truths to the weekly service.

Testify began in 2006 under the direction of Dr. Pete Richardson. Today, only two seniors from the original group remain. And for Phillip Vincent and Chasity Bell, the chapel service was their final time to perform with testify.

"It's been great," Bell said. "It's definitely a family. I know it sounds cliche, but we pray together, we laugh together, we cry together. We've evolved so much in that time."

"It's been great to see us grow in four years," Vincent added. "It's definitely made me more outgoing and given me greater confidence in sharing the Gospel."

Which is one of the interesting aspects of Testify. Both seniors said they came into the group not having the kind of oratory and performance skills they now have.

"I think a lot of people think you need a lot of acting experience," Bell said. "I came with no experience. I was very afraid to speak in front of people."

But Bell overcame her fear for speaking when she was assigned the role of the announcer. It allowed her to speak while having the safety net of a written script.

For Vincent, a religion major, performing has become almost second nature now. The group travels at least a month and practices together one time per week. He been to churches in virtually every part of Louisiana.

However, he did admit that performing in front of his friends and peers at LC was a different kind of pressure.

"These people know us," he said. "It makes me ask, 'do I live what I'm saying here on stage?'"

Nobody knows better about that than the members themselves. Through their weekly practice and monthly travel, the group has developed friendships that will last beyond their years at LC.

And so, for Vincent and Bell, while their Testify careers have come to an end, their desire is to see the group continue to grow in the future, possibly splitting into two teams - one for the road and one to perform in the area.

As for those students who might think about trying out for the group, but are not sure:

"Definitely try it out," Vincent said. "Pray about it and come talk to us. Because it's definitely a calling."
