LC falls to ETBU 3-2, winner-take-all game Monday

UPDATE: Due to the heavy rain Central Louisiana received last night, the start of Monday's game has been changed to 4 p.m.

Just when it looked like the Louisiana College softball team was ready to pack its bags for Wisconsin, the ETBU Tigers put an end to that dream, at least temporarily.

In stunning turnaround, ETBU rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the bottom of the 6th inning with three unearned runs to stun the Lady Wildcats, 3-2 Sunday and force a second, winner-take-all, championship game Monday in Pineville. Because LC hadn't lost in the tournament, ETBU will have to beat the Lady Wildcats twice.

It looked like LC had taken control of the game in the top of the 6th when Jodi Montagnino delivered her third two-run home run of the tournament, a tremendous blast that scored Brittany Menard ahead of her and spoiled what was an otherwise dominant performance by ETBU starter Ayrika Henderson. After pitching the final four innings of ETBU's dramatic 3-1 over Southwestern just a couple of hours before, Henderson wound up working seven innings in the second game and held LC to just two hits.

LC's Rene' Schwartzenburg was equally dominant as she held the Tigers hitless through five innings and appeared to be ready to work out of the 6th inning when Rebecca Young lined to Asleigh Clement for the second out of the inning. But on the play, the home plate umpire ruled that LC catcher Amber Thomas had committed interference and he awarded Young first base. So, instead of a runner at first and two outs, Schwartzenburg had to deal with first and second with only one out. It only got worse from there for LC as the Lady Wildcats committed three errors in the inning leading to three runs for ETBU.

The Lady Wildcats could not muster any offense against Henderson in the top of the 7th and fell for only the 7th time this season. Schwartzenburg suffered only her third loss of the year as opposed to 27 wins.

And so, the same two teams will go at it for a seventh time this year with a noon start scheduled. LC has defeated ETBU in four of the six meetings so far. But the Lady Wildcats will certainly remember this game as the one they let get away. The question that remains is can they bounce back and still get to pack their bags for Eau Claire? We'll find out in what should be a memorable ending to an outstanding tournament so far.
