Mission of Mercy medical team to Haiti returns home

by Sarah Hudson

The 14-member medical mission team to Haiti has returned. Check for stories and updates throughout the week about the trip.

Bonjour, hola or hello! (It just depends on if you are reading this in Haiti, the Dominican Republic or the United States.)

Our team has returned home safely from the Dominican Republic and Haiti after an incredible week of witnessing God’s hand at work.

The trip began when Dwayne Rogers, Chief of Security at Louisiana College had a vision to send a medical team to the area after the Jan. 12 earthquake that caused mass destruction in Haiti. After assembling a team that “can only be explained by God,” Rogers discussed with missionaries in the Dominican Republic and plans were made for the team to work at Good Samaritan hospital in Jimani, Dominican Republic from Saturday, Feb. 20 until Sunday, Feb. 28.

Plans changed according to where there were the most needs. All of the five nurses and one doctor stayed in Jimani to work at Good Samaritan hospital as planned, and the rest of the team, including the other two doctors and the non-medical part of the team, traveled into Croix des Bouquets, Haiti to set up medical clinics at Bethel Mission Outreach orphanage.

The hospital team helped to staff Good Samaritan and worked with all of the 52 patients, passing out medicine, bandaging wounds, caring for emotional needs and helping in many more ways.

The team at the orphanage set up medical clinics inside the walls of the orphanage and at a nearby school, seeing nearly 500 patients and passing out over 750 prescriptions.

“I thought the mission of the trip was carried out very well,” Rogers said. “I’m always amazed that if you let God assemble a team such as this, how well they work together. It was obvious God assembled this.”

We had a wonderful week in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, seeing God move in ways like never before.

Continue to check LC’s student media website at http://www.wildcatsmedia.com for the following stories that will be posted about our time in Haiti and the Dominican Republic:

•The flexibility of the team – read about ways that the team had to adjust their plans according to God’s bigger plans.

•Good Samaritan – read about what the team did at Good Samaritan over the course of four days. You will hear inspiring stories about patients that survived the earthquake and touched the lives of each person on the team.

•Bethel Mission Outreach orphanage – read about what the team did at the orphanage and how the precious children in Haiti impacted their lives.

•Pastor Gary – read Pastor Gary Hyppolite's story about how God gave him the vision to begin an orphanage in Haiti, even when he had all of the comforts in the world at his home in the United States.

•Before and After – read some of the teams expectations before the trip and how God changed and exceeded their expectations after the end of the trip.

•Port au Prince – read about the destruction that we saw in Port au Prince. Six weeks after the earthquake, rubble still fills the streets. The people still need help and your prayers.

•Aftershocks – read about the team experiencing aftershocks in Haiti and find out how the Haitians are dealing during this traumatic time.

•Worship at the orphanage – read about the team waking up every morning at 4 a.m. to hear beautiful sounds of worship from the children at the orphanage.

•Corruption in the Haitian government – read about what some of the locals and the missionaries say about where the money and relief aids are going in Haiti.

My prayer is that God would use these stories to bless your heart and move you action. Please consider how you can help the people of Haiti, either through your prayers or by giving of your time and money to see that the nation of Haiti is changed for the cause of Christ.
