Montagnino hits historic HR in Cats’ sweep of Ozarks

LC outscores Eagles 48-4 in 4-game series

PINEVILLE – The No.1-ranked Louisiana College softball swept a four-game series from the University of the Ozarks here Friday by virtue of wins of 18-0 and 10-4 to improved to 29-1 overall and 13-1 in American Southwest Conference East play.

That storyline, however, took a back seat to a little piece of history as senior outfielder Jodi Montagnino tied the school record for home runs in a season.

The fateful long ball was struck in the second inning of the 18-0 romp in game three of a two-day, four-game series and was Montagnino’s ninth of the year, tying the mark set in 2008 by Erica Harwell.

It was the end of a near flawless week for Montagnino, a native of Baton Rouge and graduate of Christian Life, who went a combined 5-for-6 on the day with four runs scored and five RBI.

Through six games this week, all American Southwest Conference East Division contests, she was a 10-for-18 with 13 RBI, eight runs scored and two home runs.

Game one, won by Rene’ Schwartzenburg (18-0) was also noteworthy in that the Lady Wildcat pitching staff of Schwartzenburg and Carlie Wheeler, combined to throw a perfect game in the five-inning, mercy-rule-shortened game.

While Schwartzenburg and Wheeler dominated in the circle, the LC offense combined for 18 runs on 19 hits.

Among the standouts in that rout were Devan Greene (3-for-4, three RBI, one run scored), Ashleigh Clement (3-for-4, two runs scored, one RBI), Mary Alice Roy (3-for-3, three runs scored, three RBI), Kelsey Brown (1-for-3, two RBI, one run scored) and Brittany Menard (2-for-3, three runs scored, two RBI).

Game two, won by Kelly Williams (5-1) and saved by Wheeler (1), lacked the historical impact of the first contest, but was not lacking in importance for the Lady Wildcats, who sought to keep distance between themselves and No. 2 Texas Tyler and No. 3 East Texas Baptist, both nationally ranked and both in LC’s division.

LC scored 10 runs on 10 hits and was led at the plate by Montagnino (3-for-4, two RBI, one run scored), and Roy (3-for-4, two runs scored, one RBI).

Also making her presence felt was Pineville native Allison Frye, a senior outfielder, who connected on her first home run of the season in the second inning.

The Lady Wildcats, who’ve just completed playing six conference games in four days, will get a week-long break thanks to the school’s Easter vacation and will return to action on April 10 with a road doubleheader against ASC East foe Texas Dallas.
