No way to earn what Jesus has already done

by Al Quartemont

Chapel speaker lays out fundamental facts of The Gospel

How does a sinful human being pay his infinite debt to a holy God?

That was the question noted Christian writer and editor Stephen Carlson challenged students with at Louisiana College's weekly chapel service Thursday.

"Humanity likes to think people can earn their salvation," Carlson said. "The Gospel says the exact opposite. It is only when we recognize our human weakness and see ourselves as the sinners we are that we turn to Jesus Christ."

In building his sermon from Romans 3:21-26 and 4:1-8, Carlson spoke of how all of mankind is born under the curse of sin and the choice each person faces of how to pay for that sin.

"Who is going to pay that infinite debt for us?" Carlson asked. "You've got two choices: You can let Jesus do it, which He's already done on the Cross... or you can try to do it yourself.

"That's why the lake of fire lasts forever - because we are finite. And to absorb the wrath of an infinite God, it's going to take an infinite amount of time."
