Promoting health on campus - the goal of the first-ever LC Health Fair

by Al Quartemont

Organizers plan to make it an annual event.

How healthy are you?

Getting the answer to that question was the goal of the first annual Louisiana College Health Fair held Tuesday at LC's Granberry Conference Center.

For one afternoon, information was available on virtually every health-related service on campus as well as many of those located in the rest of the Central Louisiana community.

"I wanted to promote health to our faculty, students and staff," said even coordinator, Carla Martin, LC's Health Services Director.

Martin and her staff already serve the LC campus with a variety of services - including vaccines, allergy shots, and medication. They also coordinate to have Dr. Ken Johnson of Pinveville on campus once a week as he offers his services and writes prescriptions for students who may need them.

But the health fair took those services to another level. Upstairs, in the Hixson Student Center, several LC students and staff took time to donate blood as part of the blood drive coordinated by LifeShare. And for those who took advantage of free screenings for things like vision, blood pressure or cholesterol, the opportunity to work to improve their health came almost immediately as Martin said several people were identified as having high blood pressure or issues with their cholesterol levels - many of them students.

"Just because they're young, it doesn't mean they don't have health issues," Martin said. "(Students who attended) all seem to really be interested in getting the information."

And based on the strong turnout and the overall success of the event, Martin said her department plans to bring another health fair again next year.

Here is a look at what services were available at this year's fair:
