Student Government getting ready for elections

The LC SGA Progress Report

By Mason Hess, 2009-2010 SGA Secretary and 2009-2010 Junior Class President

The 2009-2010 SGA Board has continued to develop to further refine the efficiency of meetings, student assistance, organizational governance, and financial accountability. The Board experienced some difficulty establishing a consistent meeting time at the beginning of the spring semester. The SGA meetings are now held on Monday at 5 p.m. in the Student Development conference room or in the Formal Lounge. SGA will evaluate itself by the goals established during the 2009 fall term. These six goals focus on the relationship between the administrative council, the student body, and campus organizations as well as a SGA budgetary plan.

The fall 2009 semester ended with an Information Technology Forum that approximately 40 students attended in addition to the Vice Presidents of Academic Affairs and Student Development, the Louisiana College President, and the entire IT staff. The SGA Board is prepared to accomplish several objectives this spring. In particular, the SGA has approved a line-item budget for the remaining academic year and will propose this budget to the incoming 2010-2011 SGA board for approval. The SGA has also diligently read its constitution to understand more fully its powers, evaluative processes, responsibilities, and limitations. This semester, the SGA will also discuss student resolutions concerning various campus projects.

In addition, the SGA has begun preparation for 2010 SGA elections. Each class—freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior—needs three class delegates; the individual class representative who receives the highest number of votes in these delegate elections will become class president. The 2010-2011 Louisiana College SGA President and Vice-President positions will be filled by elections specifically for each of those offices. A press release with important dates, contacts, and application information will be released campus-wide on March 17; interested parties will then have until March 31 to complete and submit their applications for candidacy.

On April 20, the SGA will host a campus forum to describe the purpose, powers, and responsibilities of SGA and to host the annual campaign speeches for those candidates who wish to participate. All students are encouraged to attend and participate in a campus wide campaign for the delegates of your choice. The actual 2010-2011 SGA elections will be held on Tuesday, April 27 in the Student Center as well as on April 28 at the Dead Day Pancake Breakfast. Any LC student may run for a class delegate; more detailed criterion will be provided to students when they request an application.
The Louisiana College Student Government Association looks forward to continued student participation.

SGA exists to serve as a campus advocate for student rights, perspectives, and concerns. If you would like more detailed information about the LC SGA or would like to get involved, please visit our office in the Hixon Student Center between Frye Suite and the BCM, or consult the electronic information board next to the Louisiana College Bookstore.
