Snow for Follow The Star?

Tonight's "Follow The Star could truly have a Christmas-like feel to it with the strong possibility of snow showers during the hours of the event - between 6 and 8 p.m.

Here's what News Channel 5's Kari Hall is predicting:
TODAY…High of 45 with cloudy skies. Rain developing in the afternoon with northerly winds at 10-15 mph.

TONIGHT…Rain/snow mix changing to snow with a low of 28. Snow accumulations of 1-3” possible in some areas. Heaviest snow will be Rapides parish southward to I-10. Snow ending by 4:00am.

Snow Developing Out West
December 4, 2009

Unbelievably, it appears things are coming together for a significant, unprecedented, early season snowfall across Central Louisiana. Here is a good site to monitor the radars west of here. http://radar.weather.gov/Conus/southplains_lite.php That should continue to fill in through the day and begin to pull this way. The time frame is still the same. It looks like some scattered rain will develop around the 12:00 – 3:00 P.M time frame. This should change quickly to snow and intensify around 4:00 -5:00 P.M and being to accumulate soon after dark.

The National Weather Service has hoisted a winter storm warning for 1-3 inches of snow for a good part of Central Louisiana, including Rapides Parish. Your best bet is to be off the roads as soon as possible this evening. Temperatures will start above freezing, but could fall into the upper 20s as moderate, or even heavy snow falls after dark. I’m on board with the NWS and their forecast of 1-3 inches of snow, though I will stick with my forecast of isolated 5 inch totals somewhere 20 miles north or south of a Deridder to Woodworth to Simmesport line.

Most of this snow will melt tomorrow. What doesn’t melt tomorrow will be long gone on Sunday. Oh well, it will be nice to see all those snow covered Christmas cards for another year! With regard to travel, just don’t do it. Here in the south we’re not equipped to deal with this volume of snow, so there is no need to chance driving unless you absolutely have to. We’re loading up on firewood here at the house, we have dinner planned and bought, and have all the necessary items to make smores. That’s about all you’ll need tonight. There could be spotty power outages due to falling limbs in areas where snow is heaviest, but I don’t expect this to be a huge problem.
