The Gospel of Luke comes alive at LC Chapel

by Al Quartemont

Dramatist Wesley Brainard performs his ministry of art.

Dramatist Wesley Brainard remembers well the last time he performed at LC's Thursday Chapel.

"I did the Book of Hebrews, and I really botched the job," Brainard said. "And while I was in the middle of forgetting my lines, someone in the audience said, 'you're doing awesome.' And it just made me feel so good in that moment to pick up right where I left off and to keep going. I'll never forget that girl."

Fortunately, Brainard didn't need any cheers of encouragement this time. His performance at LC's Feb. 25 Chapel was one of passion and high energy as Brainard brought to life The Gospel of Luke in a 45-minute dramatization of Luke's account of the life of Christ.

Brainard, who works out of Tulsa, Okla. with Charakter Ministry of the Arts, had the challenge of paring down what is usually a 75-minute drama - a performance he has down at least 400 times now. In this, his second appearance at LC's chapel, Brainard was able to present what he hoped would minister to the students and faculty in attendance.

"I'm presenting words that have weight and words that have life in them all by themselves," Brainard said. "They don't need me. But I desire to be a vessel - something through which God can move - that (the audience) can hear the voice of the Lord for themselves."

Brainard is back at Louisiana College for the annual Drama Competition this weekend at the Martin Performing Arts Center. He has attended that event each of the last nine years. He'll take time to work with aspiring drama students on their skills.

And in Brainard, students from around the state will have the opportunity to hear from a man who graduated with honors from the famed Marcel Marceau School of Mime in Paris, France. When he is not performing, Brainard is often working with drama classes to teach them from the experience he has gained.

One thing he has incorporated into his own performances is to listen for the prompting from the Holy Spirit - being sensitive to how God might be using him in the moment.

"There's feedback that the audience gives me," Brainard said. "I feel like sometimes the Lord will lead me to say something or stay longer on a moment or go and stand and look at a particular person. That's what I want. I really want the Lord to just guide me."
