The true meaning of “greatness.”

by Al Quartemont

Mike Miller delivers message to students at Feb. 28 chapel.

For those who think they need to have their "15 minutes of fame," Pastor Mike Miller of First Baptist Church in Kenner, La. had a competing thought at the Feb. 28 chapel service at Louisiana College.

"The world in not in need of more famous people," Miller said. "It's in need of more men and women called by God who will lay down themselves, take up their cross and follow Jesus."

Miller spoke students, faculty and staff about "The True Meaning of Greatness." Using the Gospel of Mark 10:35-45 as his text, Miller expounded upon the desire of Jesus' young disciples James and John and their desire to "be great."

"He did not criticize their ambition to be great," Miller said. "He redirected their ambition by redefining what greatness is."

Miller pointed to the verses that Jesus offered as a response, Mark 10:42-45, which point to those who desire to be great "shall be your servant. And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and give His life a ransom for many." (New King James)

"When it comes to greatness, God doesn't look at what men look at," Miller said. "True greatness... is marked by humility, self-denial and servant-hood. The ultimate example is Jesus."
