There’s an app for that!

iPhone apps provide convenience and fun for college students.

You got caught by the speed trap? There’s an app for that.

You want to update your Facebook status? There’s an app for that.

You want to pop bubble wrap? There’s an app for that.

“There’s an app for that,” has become quite the idiomatic phrase representative of our wired, or now wireless, generation. The increasing popularity of the iPhone and iTouch has become quite apparent as of late. Before you write them off as an expensive frivolity, you may want to rethink that.

Despite the fact that “there’s an app for that,” has become quite the junior high punch line, not far removed from the likes of, “that’s what she said,” there is some legitimate truth to the statement. And in that, there are quite a few applications that can make college life a bit more convenient.

For instance, I’ve quickly realized that having been away from the classroom for a month has left me quite slow in the ability to keep up with note taking in a particular class. While, I wanted desperately to scream aloud, “Switch to decaf!” I refrained. Instead, I found iProRecorder to be quite effective in picking up the slack.

iProRecorder can be found on iTunes for $5, although there are several similar applications which cost much less. Its use is quite simple: it turns your iPhone or iTouch into a voice recorder, making it perfect for recording those 8 a.m. classes that you consider yourself lucky if you are able to make it on time.

It is extremely user friendly, and you can even name each audio file and put them in their own folder according to class. You can decide the level of quality, and thus the size of the file. I recommend high quality, but if you sit near the front of the class, low quality should be sufficient.

Overall, I rate it as a good buy. The only negatives are the price and the size of the file that the program renders seems to be rather large even when set on low quality. I give it a 3 out of 5.

However, if you are certain that you do not want to chunk $5 on the betterment of your grade, you can always opt for the free version, iTalk Recorder. However, I can not attest to its quality.

Oh, and if you are worried about getting caught by that ever-looming possibility of a speed trap, there is an app for that: Trapster. And it’s free.
