Where did the season go? LC set to close out ‘09 vs. McMurry

by Al Quartemont

Looking for back-to-back 7-3 seasons

The LC Wildcats are playing their best football of the season. Normally, that would make a coach and his players happy.

But with this year's Wildcats, that fact also comes with disappointment. It underscores what could have been, what might have been for an LC team which will miss a higher goal it set for itself coming into the season.

"Last year everyone was fired up when we went 7-3," said head coach Dennis Dunn. "This year, it's actually a little disappointing. It's another really nice season, but there's the disappointment that this team isn't playing in the post season as well as we're playing right now."

Instead, the Cats will close out the 2009 season at home Saturday against McMurry University with a 1 p.m. kickoff at Wildcats Stadium. If LC can win, they'll finish the season 7-3.

"We're looking at it like a playoff game, " Dunn said of the McMurry game. "Last year they were 0-9 and when we played them, we played down to the level of competition and almost got beat."

Safe to say that won't happen this year - at least the part of LC taking McMurry lightly. The Indians are turning around their program as well. Former Kentucky Coach Hal Mumme is now leading the McMurry program. After being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2008, Mumme left New Mexico State and a few months later, he wound up in Abilene. He brought former Mississippi State defensive coordinator Joe Lee Dunn with him. The new staff has McMurry with a new feel. The Indians are 4-5 this season. They started 0-4, won four straight games, and then lost last Saturday to cross-town rivals Hardin Simmons.

For LC, it will be the final games in the career of 13 seniors including Ty Webb, Donovan Williams, and Zack Morris (editor's note: we'll profile each senior individually in another posting for you).

"I'm just really proud of these seniors," Dunn said.

He's hoping they can make him proud one more time.
