LC students compete for top spot in annual cook-off

On a cool November night, a hot bowl of chili seemed the perfect menu item. And Louisiana College's Union Board thought so as well.

That is why for the third year in a row, the Board sponsored its Chili Cook-Off competition with eight LC students competing for a top cash prize of $100.

And while picking just one winner was a formidable task for the judges, in the end, junior Lizzie Myers chili stood out above the rest as she voted the winner by the panel of 2009 champion Dustin Carter, Hattie B's chef Jimmy Mooney and his wife Angie.

"I was excited and pleased because I love to cook," Myers said about winning. "I worked really hard on (my chili). They said my flavor and consistency were spot on - not too spicy or too salty."

Students who attended the event were given samples of the chili cooked by the competing contestants. Each student then voted for a "people's choice" award which went to twins Brian and Brett Schaefer for their old family recipe.

Other competitors included:

-Blake Williams and her husband, Scott, who described their chili as spicy.

-Freshman Holly Johnston who cooked her chili using the deer she had shot the previous weekend while out hunting.

-Michael Doughty and Andrew Bates who made a "deer chili" with deer, corn, black beans and pinto beans as well as smashed Cayenne pepper, something Doughty said, "makes that swamp donkey kick."

-Freshman Derek Moncada and the chili he called "zesty."

-Junior Daniel Weatherford and his homemade recipe.

-Sophomore Allison Fontenot who said the key to her chili is the "special seasoning."
