Results of the annual chili cook-off

Louisiana College’s Union Board held its Annual Chili Cook Off, Thursday October 29.

Students and Faculty were invited to bring their best chili and have it judged by a panel of judges.

The judges included Director of Residence Life KB Thomas, Dr. Jim Packer Division of Business Chair, and Ms. Sabrina a long time cafeteria worker.

Of the seven chilies judged there were two prizes to be awarded, a “People’s Choice” and an “Overall Best Chili.”

Students not participating in the cook-off were invited to sample each chili and cast their “People’s Choice” vote. Junior Tamera Branham said, “I didn’t eat dinner tonight because I was so excited to sample the chilies!”

Union Board seeks to provide free events on campus and Union Board Advisor Eric Johnson said, “This event was a great success, this was the largest turn out we’ve ever had for our Chili Cook-Off.”

Freshman Cody Miguez said, “I really like the openness of an event like this, you can walk around and mingle with other people all while enjoying a tasty chili.”

Team “Fire on the Mountain” consisting of Jonathan Blackman and Seth Bellio said they were a “little anxious” about the results because they were the last chili in line to be tasted by the students.

President of Union Board Heather Brinker said, “I love cooking, that’s the only reason I entered, though the prize would be nice.”

When asked, “on a scale of one to ten how would you rate the chili cook-off” Junior Brian Schaffer described the event as “overall scrumptious and delicious.”

Once the votes were tallied it turned out team “Fire on the Mountain” had no need to be anxious, in fact they nabbed the “People’s Choice” award. The team said that they planned to go to Wal-Mart as soon as the event was over to start cashing in on their award.

Sophomore Dustin Carter won the “Overall Best Chili.” Carter said, “I thank everyone for coming out. All the chilies were awesome. I’m just glad mine reigned supreme and did the best.” As for his $75 Visa card award, I asked? He said, “School’s pretty much breaking me right now, so I’ll probably use it for school supplies next semester. Or maybe I’ll buy everyone on my debate team a round of McDonalds.”
