Wildcats Baseball wins season opener at LSUA

by LC Sports Information

Three pitchers combine for win

ALEXANDRIA, La. - The season couldn't have started much better for the LC baseball team. A strong team pitching performance coupled with timely hitting and solid fielding led the Wildcats to a 7-2 road win against local rival LSU-Alexandria.

The Wildcats (1-0) wasted little time scoring their first run of the season as Mike Doughty reached base on a single and later scored on an error by the LSU-A third baseman.
Although LC surrendered the tying run to the Generals in the third inning, the Wildcats went on to add a run in the sixth inning, two runs in the seventh and three in the ninth to pull away from LSU-A.

Along the way, Cole Bishop batted 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI while Steven Davis went 2-for-2.

Matt Savoie made the most of his lone at-bat, driving in two runs and scoring another while Jon Michael Kidd drove in a run with his first hit of the season and and Chris Magee went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Wildcats used a trio of pitchers in the opener to secure the win.
Senior Dustin Tubre got the start and went three innings, giving up two hits and an earned run while striking out three.
Justin Reed pitched three innings in relief and picked up the win, striking out four while walking no one and allowing just two hits and no runs.
Freshman lefty Anthony VanGessel made the most of his college debut, pitching the last three innings for the Wildcats and striking out one and allowing one earned run en route to the save.

LC Baseball returns to the field Thursday with a home Junior Varsity doubleheader against Warton.
The JV squad will play another home doubleheader, this time against East Mississippi, on Feb. 15 at 3 p.m. before the Wildcats varsity team against takes the field.
The varsity Wildcats will return to action on Feb. 19 with a home opener against Texas College at 6 p.m.
